July has been an intensely hot month – the perfect summer, if you ask me! The latest men’s fragrances from July have been a fun mixture of bright and musky scents for your next summer holiday and the upcoming autumnal season (if we can even talk about that yet).

July has been a busy month for fragrance launches, including new bottles from the likes of Dior, Rabanne, Calvin Klein, D.S. & Durga, and more. You can expect notes of florals, tropical fruits, sea salt, and amber, so there’s something for everyone. Here are the best nine new men’s fragrances from July 2026 that you should add to your collection.

MEN’S FRAGRANCES FROM JULY 2026

Having written about technology for decades, you'd think I could be jaded or cynical about the industry and new devices by now, but the truth is the opposite. I have seen many trends come, expand and even die down again, but I remain as enthusiastic as ever.

My latest obsession is with smart glasses. Having imagined what they could be like since childhood, the reality is we're suddenly being inundated with them. Some have displays, others just microphones and speakers, and all seem to be coming across my desk.

So when I was offered the chance to trial the new Ray-Ban Meta "AI glasses" specifically designed for glasses wearers, I could hardly refuse.

Now you could say I'm a fair weather glasses wearer. I do need reading and computer glasses, but am largely fine on distances (just a light prescription), but that in itself makes me the ideal subject for the Ray-Ban Meta Optics range.

They are able to be fitted with varifocal lenses which suit my own eyesight – a combination of distance, computer and reading glasses in one. I can therefore wear them day-in, day-out and suddenly the tech makes more sense.

That has always been my issue with the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses I've tried before. As good-looking and capable as I found them, they've been sunglasses only (and not prescription) and thus only useful in specific circumstances. When it was sunny and outside, for starters.

However, that wasn't always appropriate for the features I wanted to use. It's part of the overall appeal, but only a part.

True all-rounders

The Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics I've been testing are different though – they are true all-rounders. As well as being essential for indoor use, they also have photochromic Transitions lenses that darken when in sunlight. Win-win.

That enabled me to get a more rounded experience, using different AI features and functions for different daily tasks. For example, as I'm currently on a diet, I've been asking my Meta AI assistant about the calorie content in foods when plodding around the supermarket. Even in McDonald's (yeah, I know).

The irony is this would have been extra useful when I wasn't actually wearing glasses that help me read the same information on packets, but hey, it works. And I wouldn't get as much attention if I didn't seem to be randomly barking out questions to an invisible friend.

Also handy has been the ability to play music from my iPhone when at my desk, without needing to wear earbuds or headphones. I can also stay aware of my surroundings. This has proved especially useful as I also own a needy dog who is often pining for my attention – I don't accidentally ignore him when he's trying to tell me that little Timmy has fallen down the well, or something.

The glasses have even helped me aid my daughter with her Spanish homework. While I have a GCSE in French, my skills in linguistics are as close to zero as it can get, and so the live translation feature has come in great use – to understand what it is she's trying to say and give her feedback.

Camera control

What I've perhaps surprisingly used least is the camera functionality. There's a raging debate about smart glasses with cameras, and whether there are privacy concerns. The truth is, I only take photos or videos of people who understand that's exactly what I'm doing. The privacy light comes on, and everyone is aware.

I can see how some might misuse the facility though and more obvious safeguards should be in place, for sure. But, I wouldn't want to dispense of the camera entirely as some of my other favourite features depend on it.

Meta AI being able to see what you're looking at on command has proved useful in my test period. Being something of a tour guide whenever I've visited London has proved fun and interesting. Admittedly, I grew up in London, lived there most of my life, and I could personally give Google navigation tips, but you can always learn something new about your surroundings. We see the buildings, but how much do we really know about them?

Of course, many smart glasses can do all of the above – some with an augmented display to help guide you too. And the general Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses have exactly the same feature set, so what makes these different?

Comfort is everything

Well, comfort for one. While you can have prescription lenses added to standard Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses, the Optics range comes with a different hinge design. It can be opened 10-degrees wider for a more comfortable fit.

There are interchangeable nose pads and adjustable temple tips, too. These help make for a better fit for daily use.

The nose pads are included in the box, along with a charging case and lenses cloth, although the temple tips will need to be adjusted in a Meta store or by your local optical retailer.

Another distinct difference is the design. The chunkier Blayzer look is exclusive to the Optics range, as is the more rounded Scriber aesthetic. So if you prefer the style of either, you're best looking in this direction.

Of course, there are also a few caveats. Price is one – the Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics start at £429 for the frame and non-prescription lenses. That's around £50 more than the start price of traditional Gen 2 equivalents. You'll also have to pay extra for the lens options.

But when you consider that conventional designer glasses can cost you around the same without the smarts, you might not mind the expense. These are everyday glasses as well, after all.

All-day power?

Perhaps more noteworthy is that battery life is a maximum of eight hours with general use. You get up to 48 hours when combined with the charging case, but you won't want to keep taking them off during the day just to charge them up again.

Thankfully, I found them to last all day with lighter use – only accessing the AI functions or listening to music on and off. And by that, I meant I could wear and use them when I got up and put them back on charge at night before bed.

It was more testing when using audio navigation when out and about – the battery would run out quicker. But most days it was fine.

And of course, the glasses bit works regardless of battery, so even if you can no longer access the Meta assistant, you can still see through them.

In short, I couldn't see many downsides (pardon the pun). And the privacy debate aside, I found the Optics more comfortable, more convenient, and useful than many other smart glasses I've tested to date.

Now we just need the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses to come to the UK.

It's no secret that building a smart home is an ongoing process. What starts with one smart speaker or a single security camera can quickly turn into dozens of devices, multiple apps and an increasingly complicated web of automations.

I've spent years adding, testing and reviewing smart home gadgets, and whilst I'm happy with the setup I've ended up with, there are plenty of things I'd approach differently if I were starting again today.

So, if I could wipe the slate clean and build my smart home from scratch, these are the five things I'd prioritise from day one – and a few mistakes I'd make sure not to repeat.

1. Invest in solar-powered smart security

Solar-powered security cameras are often overlooked, largely because of concerns about how reliable they can be in the UK's unpredictable climate. I used to have the same reservations, but after paying more attention to the solar options available, I've now found myself avoiding wired cameras altogether.

In fact, not making the switch sooner is one of my biggest smart home regrets.

The obvious benefit is that solar cameras don't add to your electricity bill, but I've found the biggest advantage to be how convenient they are. As long as the solar panel gets enough direct sunlight, you have far more freedom over where you can install the camera, and many models offer a range of mounting options.

The Tapo C660 Kit has been one of my favourite solar security additions. Since installing it last summer, I've never seen the battery level drop below 90% – even through the middle of winter. It's not positioned in an especially high-traffic area, as it mainly overlooks the bottom of my garden, but it still alerts me when it detects movement, and that's really all I need from it.

It's one of the easiest and most reliable smart home additions I've made, and if I were starting my smart home again, I'd have prioritised solar security much earlier.

2. Put more focus on smart garden gadgets

The garden wasn't exactly a core part of my smart home setup when I started building it, and I completely underestimated how much enjoyment I'd get from bringing smart technology outdoors.

Smart outdoor lighting has been brilliant for summer evenings and hosting, but there's one category I wish I'd discovered much sooner – smart bird feeders and bird houses. Birdfy's models have brought me an enormous amount of joy in recent weeks, and if you enjoy spending time in your garden or like seeing the wildlife around your home, I think you're missing out if you haven't considered one.

The Ebony Nest Ebony Bird House and Ebony Lite Bird Feeder have been the focus of my recent garden upgrades. Both provide somewhere for birds to feed or nest, whilst also incorporating a camera that can film and identify the birds that visit. The Birdfy app can then notify you when birds arrive, tell you what species you're looking at and even let you watch them live.

Both models have built-in solar panels, so once you've set up the camera, it can start charging immediately. You don't have to worry about constantly removing the camera to charge it indoors, although that's still an option if you want to position the feeder or house somewhere covered and away from direct sunlight. I've mounted mine on different walls around my garden, where they get plenty of sun whilst giving me a great view of the birds visiting.

I just wish I'd discovered the Birdfy gadgets sooner. My smart home is no longer limited to the four walls of my house, and that's made the whole experience much more enjoyable.

3. Don't abandon smart lighting

Smart home security has evolved dramatically in recent years, and as a smart home reviewer, a huge amount of my time is spent testing the latest security cameras, video doorbells and motion sensors. The downside is that I've found myself putting smart lighting to one side, which is something I wish I hadn't done.

Yes, smart security helps protect your home and keeps your smart home working in the background, but smart lighting can do far more than simply make a room look nice.

You can use schedules to mimic natural daylight throughout the day, automatically turn lights on and off when you're away, or even use certain models as visual timers for things like cooking, working or getting ready for bed.

I wish I'd built more of these automations into my setup from the beginning. Security might be the most obvious place to start when building a smart home, but lighting is arguably where you'll notice the benefits every single day.

4. Stick to one brand for security devices

As I've mentioned, I have security cameras and other gadgets from multiple brands spread across my smart home. Whilst I have plenty of favourites – including Reolink, Tapo and Aqara – sticking to fewer brands is one thing I wish I'd done differently from the start.

On paper, having cameras from different manufacturers doesn't sound like a big deal. I can view and control many of them through my Echo Show 8, which acts as the central hub in my smart home. When I'm at home, I can simply ask Alexa to show me a specific camera feed, and it works well.

The problem becomes more obvious when I'm away, and when I want to quickly check multiple cameras from my phone, I often have to jump between different apps. That's not exactly difficult, but it's unnecessarily frustrating when all I want to do is quickly see what's happening at home.

It's one of those lessons you only really learn after you've built your smart home over time. Having the latest and greatest camera from every brand might seem appealing, but sometimes consistency is more valuable than having the "best" individual product.

5. Make Matter a priority from the beginning

Finally, and probably my biggest regret of all, is that I didn't prioritise Matter from the beginning.

Matter is becoming increasingly important to the smart home, giving compatible devices a common standard that helps them work across different platforms and ecosystems. With support from major names including Google, Apple and Amazon, it's also a standard that's designed to make smart home devices more interoperable as the industry evolves.

Smart home gadgets aren't always cheap, and the last thing I want is to spend money building a setup that becomes increasingly difficult to integrate as my needs change. Buying Matter-compatible products can help give you more flexibility in the future, particularly if you decide to switch platforms or introduce devices from different manufacturers.

There are also important benefits around privacy and security, including local control in supported setups, although the exact features depend on the individual device and ecosystem.

If I were starting my smart home from scratch today, I'd make Matter compatibility one of the first things I checked before buying anything. It might not be the only factor I'd consider – device quality, features and ecosystem support still matter – but I'd want to know that whatever I buy has a better chance of fitting into my smart home for years to come.

If you'd told me five years ago that one of the hottest consumer tech categories in 2026 would be dedicated vlogging cameras, I'd probably have laughed.

After all, smartphones have become astonishingly capable, with every new flagship promising bigger sensors, smarter AI processing and another lens squeezed into an impossibly thin body.

On paper, it looked like the end of standalone cameras for anyone who wasn't a professional photographer. As someone who’s been passionate about photography and cameras for nearly two decades, I was very sad to see how things were going.

I like cameras, still photos, and even though I totally appreciate videos are all the rage now – I watch quite a few myself – I wanted to believe there was a future for dedicated camera gear.

I was right, but not in a way I thought. As T3’s in-house action camera and drone expert, I’ve been following compact camera design for a while, and lately, I noticed a trend: vlogging cameras are big.

Whether it's DJI's Osmo Pocket 4, Insta360's Luna Ultra, Sony's ZV range or Canon's EOS R50 V, manufacturers are doubling down on cameras built specifically for creators, and, more importantly, people are buying them. More curiously, I don't think that's happening despite smartphones becoming better, but because of it.

The return of the specialist gadget

In the past two decades or so, the trend has been to fuse all the different functionalities into a single device that can do it all. And yes, I’m talking about everyone’s favourite love-hate gadget, the smartphone.

Our phones became our cameras, sat navs, music players, wallets and even our boarding passes. Now, I'm seeing the pendulum swing back the other way, toward a place where people increasingly want products that excel at one thing rather than trying to do everything.

CD and vinyl players are making a comeback, and people have also started buying DVDs and Blu-rays instead of spending cash on subscriptions. Vlogging cameras are perhaps the best example of that shift.

The category isn't new, which is part of the appeal. Canon and Sony have spent decades refining compact cameras, while newer players such as DJI have rapidly accelerated innovation with their gimbal technology.

As a result, the latest generation of vlogging cameras feels remarkably polished, with fast autofocus, excellent face and eye tracking, clever shooting modes and image stabilisation that's good enough to make handheld footage look like it was filmed on professional equipment.

They've finally grown up

Then there is mechanical stabilisation. I’d still pick a GoPro Mission 1 Pro or a DJI Osmo Action 6 for mountain biking, skiing or anything involving mud and water.

But for everyday filming, they're often a compromise, with their ultra-wide lenses distorting faces and making arms look unnaturally long. They can also be unflattering when you're talking directly to camera (well, modern cameras are pretty good, to be fair).

A dedicated vlogging camera produces a more natural-looking image. That difference becomes even more obvious when you compare them to smartphones. Computational photography has come a long way, but physics still matters.

Dedicated vlogging cameras have larger sensors, better optics, and far more room for manufacturers to optimise image quality rather than relying almost entirely on software.

I'm also a big fan of how approachable these cameras have become. Subject tracking, vertical recording, wireless transfers and professional colour profiles like D-Log mean you don't have to be an experienced filmmaker to produce footage that looks genuinely impressive.

Small cameras, big advantages

The form factor is another component that makes vlogging cameras so appealing. I can slip them into a jacket pocket or bum bag without thinking twice, yet I'd much rather pull one out in a café or on a busy street than a mirrorless camera with a chunky zoom lens attached.

They're less intimidating, people react more naturally around them, and they're simply more enjoyable to carry every day.

Not to mention that having a dedicated camera helps preserve your phone's battery.

When I'm travelling, I don't particularly want to spend hours recording video on the same device I'm relying on for navigation, tickets, mobile payments and communication. A dedicated camera keeps my phone charged, leaves plenty of storage available and lets me swap SD cards whenever I need more space.

The category is becoming more versatile, too. Early pocket gimbal cameras were almost entirely wide-angle affairs, but newer models, such as the Luna Ultra mentioned above, are starting to add telephoto options, making them much better suited to travel, product reviews and more cinematic storytelling.

No gadget is perfect

It’s not all sunshine and lollipops when it comes to vlogging cameras, though. They're expensive, especially for something that's effectively designed around a single purpose

Their moving camera assemblies are also more vulnerable than the fixed lenses on action cameras, though brands are clearly addressing this with tougher designs and protective covers.

I'd also argue that anyone serious about content creation should budget for a wireless microphone, because great audio still makes a bigger difference than most camera upgrades.

And while image quality is excellent, these cameras still can't match the low-light performance of larger APS-C or full-frame cameras. (That said, sensors in vlogging cameras are getting bigger and algorithms smarter, so this disadvantage is disappearing. Slowly.)

Even with those caveats, I think we're witnessing something bigger than the rise of another gadget category.

For years, we assumed smartphones would absorb every dedicated device. Instead, people are rediscovering the value of products that have a clear purpose. Just as dedicated running watches continue to thrive alongside smartwatches and action cameras remain indispensable for adventure sports, vlogging cameras have found their place by doing one thing exceptionally well.

Of course, the smartphone isn't going anywhere, but after watching this category evolve over the past few years, I'm convinced dedicated vlogging cameras aren't going anywhere either. If anything, I think they're only just getting started.

Nary a week goes by without a big addition to the libraries of the world's biggest and best streaming services – it's a vital part of their plan to become people's default destination for entertainment. While the summer months are sometimes a little slower in the TV world, on streamers it's a different story.

That said, this is an interesting week for the twin dragons of Netflix and Prime Video, and the shows and movies they're adding are arguably a little less high-profile than some recent weeks. I've taken a look at every new project they're uploading, to pick out three intriguing highlights that you'll want to know about regardless.

The Bombing of Pan Am 103

• Streaming on: Netflix from 30 July

This looks like quite a heavy one, but as a co-production between Netflix and the BBC, The Bombing of Pan Am 103 might be one of the more important shows released this year. It tells the story of the Lockerbie bombing, but does so from multiple angles. It'll take in not just those on the plane, but also those on the ground in the UK and US, trying to investigate an unthinkable situation.

With a long time span to focus on and plenty of sensitivity given the very real event that it's portraying, everything points towards this being an extremely memorable show. That said, it's not going to be the easiest watch, for obvious reasons, so factor that in while you plan your evenings.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2

• Streaming on: Prime Video from 31 July

Prime Video brings the caped crusader back for a second season of this animated series, and it's got a great reputation. Fans of The Animated Series have been waiting for a real successor for quite some time now, and this version might just be the closest thing we've ever got.

It shows a version of Batman set in the golden age, without all the technology and gizmos that became associated with the character in some more recent portrayals. That arguably keeps the show simpler and more faithful to the detective roots, with mysteries forming a key role in its drama.

Final Project

• Streaming on: Netflix from 29 July

This interesting-looking Spanish-language show takes a look at cyberbullying and the toxic environment that high school can become for students if they're targeted by malicious classmates. Tamara is an alternative teenager who has become the butt of constant jokes and abuse from some popular kids.

Her final project for the year takes a twist when tragedy strikes Tamara, but the trailer makes it pretty clear that this might all be part of her plan to get revenge on her tormentors. This might sink without a trace, but don't be surprised if it becomes a sleeper hit, either – Netflix has form on that front.

It took a while but the UK was next in line for the Samsung Galaxy XR after its release in the US and Korea last year, and the wait may well have been to the benefit of Brits. That’s because since its original launch, the headset has been served patches and software tweaks that most certainly make for a better experience.

It is the first Android XR headset to hit the market, while also exhibiting Samsung’s ambitions in the higher-end mixed reality field, and there’s no denying the similarities to Apple’s Vision Pro. But at the same time, it is also something of its own beast, which I found out during the week I spent testing it.

The design and build

Having also played with an Apple Vision Pro and owning a Meta Quest 3, I am no stranger to the wonderful world of augmented reality. Also to the art of strapping a shoe box to your face for hours on end. And while it can never feel truly natural, the Galaxy XR does a great job of balancing its weight.

It’s considerably lighter than the Vision Pro (by around 200g) and is similar to the Quest 3 in that regard.

That’s not to say it is the most comfortable headset in the world. As a thoroughly premium device it is built with thoroughly premium, solid materials and therefore there’s less of a focus on padding. However, it is easy to fit tight to your head shape using the adjustment knob on the rear, so at least you don’t have to worry about wobble.

In the hand it feels sturdy and expensive – which it is – but importantly, it gives the impression that it’s something that’s built to last.

You also get additional forehead spacers in the box, for different sizes of foreheads and glasses wearers, plus silicon nose guards that sit under the lenses to block out ambient light. You don’t have to use them (I find it can get hotter when you do), but they do make for a more immersive experience and as they sit across the bridge of your nose, they also help reduce the pressure.

Then there’s the battery unit, which at 302g, weighs more than half the weight of the headset itself. That attaches via a cable to the side of the Galaxy XR and is designed to sit in a pocket. You can also charge it while during use, which gives you infinite playtime (it’s up to two-and-a-half hours, otherwise).

The display

Once the fit has been adjusted and you enter the experience, the first thing that strikes you about the Galaxy XR is just how incredible the display is. While it features similar Micro-OLED panel technology to the Apple Vision Pro, Samsung’s alternative has a higher resolution and smaller pixel pitch.

That results in a jaw dropping, super sharp image where you simply cannot pick out individual pixels. It’s the best VR/XR display I’ve used to date and makes it very easy to become absorbed without much adjustment. Admittedly, Apple’s alternative is capable of higher refresh rates, but when it comes to clarity, there’s a clear winner.

Of course, the image is nothing without the software and experience, and that’s where it comes down to personal preference.

It’s worth remembering at this stage that Android XR is still a fledgling system. Developed in co-operation between Google, Qualcomm and Samsung, it’ll eventually spread to multiple headsets and smart glasses. But the Galaxy XR is breaking new ground here, and it feels like it, at times.

The software

The in-visor set-up wizard is simple and intuitive, but I did have some issues with validating my Samsung account. The headset has some extra compatibility features if you’re a Samsung Galaxy phone owner and have the official Galaxy XR app, but considering it is a largely autonomous device, it will also work with iPhone and other Android handsets.

My main issue was that to log into a Samsung account using two-factor authorisation, it needed to send me a code by text to my UK number – and that never arrived on my iPhone. It could be that it was my network at fault, but I struggled to get past this hiccup until I finally found I could skip the Samsung account setup entirely. It just took a while to figure that out.

Once in, that’s where you get the full “wow” moment. The headset can be controlled using either pinch gestures on either hand or a combination of eye tracking and gestures. Both work wonderfully.

The cameras on the front of the unit track your hands in real time, even showing an outline that follows your hand movements to show you how accurate it is. There are also cameras that face down from the visor, so if using eye tracking to look at things you want to interact with – such as app icons – you can just pinch your fingers without needing to lift your hand. It’s very clever and intuitive.

On top of this, the outside world is captured and sent to the display in real time too. And while it’s not represented in as high-resolution as the overlays and apps, it is in full colour and still impressive. It helps ground you in an experience, making you feel like you are still in the real world while interacting with the virtual. And that also helps prevent the sort of motion sickness normally associated with the genre.

There is a mode whereby you can block the outside world and enter purely virtual landscapes, and many of the games and apps are VR rather than augmented, but I found myself using the overlays and AR tools more than any of the full VR options – especially when some of the best features are specific to this form.

Google’s renowned Circle to Search AI feature has even more relevance when you can circle anything you can see in the physical world, to get information and even purchase details on items you can see. And you can turn pictures and videos in your Google Photos library into spatial estimations, to look around them in a new perspective.

Then there’s the ability to loom over Google Maps in a god-like mode, exploring streets and buildings as if you were some sort of town planning deity. Indeed, most of my favourite experiences came from the free software provided as part of Android XR, which is not only a highlight of the Galaxy XR, but promising for future devices too.

Handily, if you purchase a Galaxy XR before the end of 2026 you also get a free bundle of apps and subscriptions to some of Google’s best services. This Explorer Pack contains a whole host of essential additions, including a year’s worth of Google AI Pro and 5TB of cloud storage.

There’s 12-months of YouTube Premium too, which gives you YouTube streaming – including spatial videos – without ads, and another great gift is a year’s membership to the Google Play Pass. This offers up hundreds of free Android games that can be played in the headset. I found it essential in my test period, not least thanks to the variety.

Then there is Adobe Pulsar to turn video creations into interactive experiences, including the ability to add 3D depth to them for other headset wearers to also enjoy. And there’s an NFL VR game thrown in too, which is a real standout, if you like that sort of thing. If not, the mindfulness service, Calm Premium, helps you unwind.

The whole bundle is worth over £600, so helps justify the headset cost a touch, but also gives you a decent amount of tools and games to get you started. As I found out, you’ll certainly not be left wanting for something to do.

The caveats

That’s not to say the headset doesn’t come with caveats. Save for its price, which is clearly in the luxury and premium range (although nowhere near the Apple Vision Pro’s hefty ticket in that regard), the headset does have some comfort issues, as previously mentioned. Even when fiddling with the nose pieces and head spacers, you might find it testing for long periods of wear.

Considering the battery life is limited to a little over two hours (when not tethered further to a USB-C charger), that’s almost a moot point anyway.

It’s also worth mentioning that although eye tracking works superbly and helps prevent motion sickness, not all the apps you’ll encounter support it, so you might still suffer at times if you’re prone to such things.

Still, that’s hardly Samsung’s fault – it has done everything it can to help mitigate the traditional issues with virtual and mixed reality, it’s now down to app developers to do their bit too.

Thankfully, that’s where Android XR steps in. It gives developers a solid foundation for a future where multiple headsets and devices will be unified in their offerings. Samsung is blazing a trail with the Galaxy XR, and in style to boot. Hopefully, others will follow in its wake.

In conclusion

So what did I learn in my week with the Samsung Galaxy XR? Well, I'll be honest, I'd almost given up on headsets and multiple mixed realities they promise. Beyond the initial wave of excitement, there was no escaping the sense that they provide a very solo experience – whether it be for work or play.

However, the sharpness and clarity afforded by something so premium made me think again. You can enjoy spending time inside the Galaxy XR because it offers experiences that are familiar yet better than real-world equivalents.

For example, I watched some of the World Cup coverage on an IMAX-sized screen, which filled my entire field of view. And from the comfort of my own living room, to boot. I could even see my beer on a table nearby to pick it up.

And while I haven't yet tried the headset on a long haul flight, I can only imagine how transformative it could be for movie viewing, while also keeping an eye on fellow passengers and airline staff.

My only real gripe is the fit, which can apply pressure across the bridge of the nose during lengthy use. One solution is to add your own top strap, which you can find in 3D printed form from enthusiasts online. Maybe even Samsung will add one to its accessories list at some point.

I hope so. But as it stands, although this headset is admittedly a niche product for a select audience, especially at its "luxury" price point, it fizzles with promise. It excitingly shows what is possible with Android XR in the now and future, and I for one am once again sold.

As much as I love the experience of driving a car, there's a lot to be said for sitting in the passenger seat. That's especially true of the new 2027 BMW i7 (G70 LCI). This luxury saloon has had a significant upgrade on the original BMW i7 that launched back in 2022 – which is still an excellent vehicle.

For the driver, the i7 now features a similar Panoramic iDrive system as the other Neue Klasse models, such as the BMW iX3, iX5 and the upcoming BMW i3. It has also had some styling changes on the outside, with a reprofiled kidney grille, new crystal glass on the daytime running LEDs, and new two-tone paint combinations, but it's still the passenger that really gets spoilt in this car.

It's no surprise that the BMW i7 has been a popular executive limo. It offers extreme comfort for the rear passengers, and this updated model has made it even better. I spent a day with one of the first models in the country for an exclusive look around. It reminded me just how much I like this car, and how those new features really add up.

iDrive second display

You don't need to be sitting in the back in the BMW i7 to experience luxury, as that front passenger seat now has its very own screen. In addition to the 17.9-inch angled central display, it features a large 14.6-inch passenger display in the same style.

This means that in addition to the extremely comfortable Merino leather seat (or other chosen fabric), with massage function, heating and cooling, you can watch content on your very own big-screen display.

The screen has been designed so that it can't be watched by the driver, for safety reasons. In addition to the fact that its positioning is out of the driver's eyeline, it features not only a privacy shield protector, but will also dim if the built-in camera detects the driver looking at it.

Back seat

As nice as those front seats are, it's the back where you really want to be, and for maximum effect, the one not behind the driver. Both sides have a new screen in the door handles that provides adjustments to the seat position, including leg support, heating and massage functions, plus lighting and the blinds on the side windows, back window and panoramic (Sky Lounge) roof.

If you are sitting behind the front passenger seat, the comfort gets even greater thanks to the Executive Lounge seats. With a single press of a button on the screen, the seat lies right back, and the front passenger seat folds forward, giving you extra space and even a footrest.

The central armrest has a tray for charging your phone, and there's even an option to add a fridge, should you need to keep those refreshments cool on the journey. On a long journey, you could just as easily get some rest in the back of the i7, as much as you could do a day's work – work tray tables are also available as an option.

Entertainment

As much as you could sleep or work in the BMW i7, the biggest reason not to is the entertainment on offer. BMW has upgraded its Theatre Screen display, so the massive 31.3-inch display now has an 8K resolution, so you can watch your content in style.

The Theatre Screen folds down from the roof automatically (controlled from the side displays or the driver), while closing the blinds at the same time. The screen is running the latest BMW operating system X, and includes gaming options, streaming apps such as TiVo and YouTube, plus video conferencing options and an HDMI input so that you can connect your own device to the screen.

All this premium visual entertainment is paired with one of the best audio systems in existence. It features the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, with 36 speakers and 1965 watts of power. This also delivers Dolby Atmos sound to make those movies on the Theatre Screen truly cinematic.

Entertainment on wheels

When it comes to long car journeys, I often prefer to be the one at the wheel, but if I could do them in the BMW i7, I'd definitely opt for the back seat. The rear of this car is a cross between a business class plane seat, a cinema and a games machine. As nice as the new Panoramic iDrive system looks for the driver, it's definitely in the back where the magic happens.

The new BMW i7 is available to order now, with prices starting from £104,230 in the UK and $115,550 in the US. The model I tried was the 60 xDrive M Sport at £120,335.

Avid watch fans and collectors will never forget the day they bought their first Rolex. It’s a big milestone moment, and as Rolex watches at retail have never been easy, it can take some time as authorised dealers tend to hold on to their stock as much as possible.

With this – and the costs – in mind, it’s often easier and more beneficial to buy a pre-owned Rolex. To find out more, I spoke to Robertino Altieri, CEO and Founder of WatchGuys about the secondary Rolex market.

“During 2020, Rolex prices boomed and secondary market values of certain models were almost a percentage of what they are now. Since then, the market has leveled out, but certain watches continue to trend upward in value,” Altieri explains. “But as a new collector, there are a few ways you can strategize your purchase on the secondary market.”

To help you find your perfect Rolex, Altieri gives his advice on how to buy one, and which models you should and shouldn’t buy.

Buying a pre-owned Rolex: The Do’s and Don’ts

At the start of 2026, Rolex raised its prices across all its models, including full gold and two-tone watches which climbed to 9% higher. Halfway through the year in June 2026, Rolex raised its prices a second time adding 5% more to full gold and 2.5% more to two-tone.

The main reason for this is simple: gold. As Altieri explains, “Rolex runs its own in-house foundry, the market value of the metal flows directly into the retail price of every gold watch. Gold has roughly doubled over the past three years, and it currently trades around $4,000 an ounce. This works to the watch's detriment on the resale side, because the retail value of gold often surpasses the watch's own secondary market value.”

So, when buying a pre-owned Rolex rather than new, chances are you can save money on Rolex gold and two-tone watches. “If your goal is to save money, lean into gold and two-tone references, where retail pricing has been inflated by the rising cost of gold and pre-owned examples trade at meaningful discounts,” says Altieri.

There’s nothing wrong with buying a Rolex that’s popular or limited edition, either. They’re good investment pieces to add to your collection, and “if your goal is appreciation, focus on the steel sports models and discontinued icons that consistently outrun supply.”

But along a similar vein, there are certain Rolex watches that are simply not very popular and should be approached with caution, as they may not be great money savers on the secondary market. These include Rolex Datejust models, like the 126303, 278273 and 126331, as well as highly exclusive pieces like the Rolex GMT-Master II 126729VTNR "Hornet".

1. Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLRO "Pepsi"

A model all Rolex fans know and love, the Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLRO "Pepsi" is Rolex’s most recently discontinued watch. “Its market value doubled after discontinuation was announced and has leveled out since, but these models are likely to hold their value for years to come,” says Altieri. Currently, you can buy a "Pepsi" for around $26,000 on the secondary market.

2. Rolex Daytona 126500LN "Panda"

The Rolex Daytona 126500LN "Panda" features a white dial which is often considered “a holy grail model for collectors”. It’s extremely hard to get at retail, and is expected to continue climbing in value, as it currently holds a market value around $38,000.

3. Rolex Datejust 126334 Green Dial

Next, the Datejust 126334 pairs a 41mm case and a fluted white gold bezel with one of Rolex's most sought-after dial colors: green. “Green dials move quickly, and this configuration blends everyday versatility with strong collector demand, making it a smart current-production buy that tends to hold value better than the average Datejust.” The jubilee reference has a market value around $17,000, with its oyster counterpart going for just under $16,000.

3. Rolex Datejust 126334 Green Dial

The high-contrast white dial with the orange 24-hour hand is instantly recognizable and consistently in demand.” It’s a steel sports model which is tough to secure at retail, but the Polar is a strong long-term hold on the secondary market and has market value around $13,500.

5. Rolex Submariner 126618LB "Bluesy"

The Rolex Submariner 126618LB full gold "Bluesy" is a hefty piece and not quite as popular as its two-tone counterpart. But you can save yourself up to $5,000 if you buy it on the secondary market. It has a market value around $46,500, and a shocking retail value of $50,900.

6. Rolex GMT-Master II 126711CHNR "Root Beer"

Onto money-saving options, the Rolex GMT-Master II 126711CHNR "Root Beer" is a two-tone GMT with a black and brown split bezel and Everose gold center links. “It’s not quite as popular as other GMT models, and the presence of gold makes it a watch you can buy for up to $2,000 under retail on the secondary market. Many are available for around $22,500!

7. Rolex Submariner 126613LN

The next money saving model is the Rolex Submariner 126613LN. As a two-tone piece with a black dial and bezel with yellow gold center links, “it carries a similar look to a GMT, at a great price.” According to Altieri, you can save up to $3,000 when buying this model pre-owned. It’s available around $18,000, with unworn models selling for up to $20,500.

8. Rolex GMT-Master II 126710GRNR "Bruce Wayne"

A well-named watch, the Rolex GMT-Master II 126710GRNR "Bruce Wayne" has a black and grey split-bezel GMT. Another model that doesn’t stay in stock for long, it’s a classic piece and a cult favourite, whose value will likely continue to trend upwards.

9. Rolex Submariner 116610LV "Hulk"

Another discontinued winner is the Rolex Submariner 116610LV "Hulk." A stunning Submariner with a matching green bezel and dial – hence the nickname – this model flies off the shelf once stocked, and you can get one for around $20,000.

10. Rolex Submariner 126610LV "Kermit" / "Starbucks"

Finally, the current green-bezel Rolex Submariner 126610LV is a strong current-production pick. “It carries the spirit of the discontinued "Hulk" in a slimmer, more wearable case. Demand consistently outpaces supply at retail, so pre-owned examples command a premium, but this is a model that has historically held and grown its value.” It has a market value around $16,800, about $5,000 over retail.

The world's biggest audio brands might love to shout about their newest speakers, but they're rarely keen to let people into their research and development hubs to see how those speakers were actually made.

It's not that they're ashamed of the work (far from it), but more that there are a heap of risks attached, not least that journalists could get peeks at still long-distant projects that aren't yet ready for the limelight.

So, when Bowers & Wilkins, one of the UK's most lauded audio houses (and a T3 Award winner for Best Headphones in 2026), invited T3 to check out its R&D facility near Horsham, in West Sussex, we leapt at the chance.

This sort of tour is a proper first – Bowers & Wilkins was at pains to underline that it had never before let the media into this facility.

Inside, I got to spend a good few hours embedded in a couple of Bowers' custom-built listening rooms, and while the new 800 Series Diamond D5 speakers I heard blew me away, the intricacy of those rooms took me by surprise and really stuck in my mind.

Behind the curtain

When you hear "listening room", it's easy to imagine a normal room with some sound-proofing panels, and then an extremely expensive setup of audio gear.

In truth, that's probably what many wealthy individuals get in their homes when they commission audio rooms, since the results are acoustically impressive while concentrating the cost on that audio gear.

Bowers, though, is swimming in different waters; it doesn't want great sound – it wants perfect sound. Rather than outfitting a room with soundproofing, this means literally building a soundproof room within a room. Bowers has a few of these in its R&D facility, and we used the biggest of them for the afternoon.

You immediately get a sense of the room's scale when you step in, because it has two doors. Between the outer and inner doors there's about a foot of space, effectively a sound-dampening vacuum, and it illustrates how the room is built. I was told about spring systems underneath it to keep it elevated above the original floor, and an estimate that the room itself weighs 12 tonnes.

The photo below is of the window in the room (something Bowers' engineers reportedly requested for their own wellbeing when it was being built). It shows you the air gap and the thickness of the walls.

A pretty penny

When I asked Bowers & Wilkins about how much this might cost to build, I was told: "When we built that room – around £250,000. That’s the room, not the components inside the room." Anyone who's following tech knows that inflation is a real thing, though, so it's no surprise that a follow-up clarified: "Today, probably more like £300,000."

Those responses came from Andy Kerr, the brand's director of product marketing and communications, and he was effusive about what that sizeable investment has brought to Bowers. Its previous R&D facility was storied but cramped, and when Bowers moved to its new location a few years ago, getting more listening rooms was one of its main priorities.

Neutrality at its purest

Needless to say, these rooms aren't for pleasure listening (although I'm sure they get their share of after-hours use). The idea is that this sort of pristine environment gives B&W's engineers total neutrality in which to assess their in-progress speakers' sound, and to hear the results of their tuning changes.

When I asked how often each room was in use, Kerr told me that the location "is an engineering facility, and the main listening room has been created with a specific function in mind, which leads to the room being pretty much in continuous use."

With a couple of other, smaller listening rooms also available, that spells out just how important these pristine environments are for audio development.

That's before you start to even discuss the equipment within these rooms. Some quick maths on the setup I was listening to by the end of the afternoon has its value sitting at around £300,000.

God-tier audio

The acoustics are, indeed, completely mad. Bowers staff had to come in to swap out heavy speakers every few minutes, and it was crazy how easily you could tell when the inner door was closing – the ambient noise of the world just sort of sucked away into nothing.

Once the music started, it didn't take long to realise just how impactful such a perfect environment can be. I remember as a teenager visiting an ancient Greek amphitheatre, at Epidauros, and being blown away by how its design carried sound around a huge open space. This was like the reverse – a space that felt like there was no sound, until it was completely filled by whichever speaker we had turned to.

To be clear, though, I'm not done writing up my visit to Bowers & Wilkins – I've concentrated here on the practical side of its listening room setup, but the sound is something I'm saving for another write-up this week. In that, you'll get to hear what I thought of Bowers & Wilkins' newest generation 800 series, the Diamond D5.

There's a scene in Steven Spielberg's 1998 classic, Saving Private Ryan, in which Captain John Miller, played by Tom Hanks, is desperately shooting his pistol at a tank in a last-ditch attempt to take it out. It explodes in a seemingly impossible moment.

While a movie analogy isn't typical of mobile phone production, I spoke with BD Yang, Samsung's Deputy Head of Core Component Technology Team about the brand's latest Z Fold 8 folding phone – revealed at Galaxy Unpacked in London.

He confirmed the Z Fold 8 – which introduces Flex Titanium technology, in which the company has been able to create a folding layer of the metal – posed "so many challenges" that it "seemed impossible – so we started internally to call [the project] 'Saving Private Ryan'".

That's a rare piece of human insight from a corporate executive, but one that humanises the struggle in order to improve their products. "We’ve handled countless materials in the past seven generations," Yang said, in reference to Samsung's production of folding devices since back in 2019.

Why titanium?

"This time around we decided that titanium had the best fit for foldable form. Why? It's strong, stable, resistant to permanent deformation under external force – which is why it's used in golf clubs and aerospace applications – and offers improved elastic recovery."

But it wasn't an easy solution to deliver. After all, titanium is a chemical element and metal in its own right. To make it fold repeatedly, in order to provide a more rigid, flatter display and help to negate the crease that so often plagues foldable devices, it needed to be super thin.

"We knew that titanium would be the next level," says Yang. But there were "so many challenges to overcome without compromising; so many roadblocks when we started the project. But in the end we broke through – and are very proud of this achievement".

So just how is it achieved? The titanium layer is topped with a film that's "roughly a third the thickness of a human hair" and created using "ultra processing and heating to make it so thin".

The plate beneath has the "bottom part cut out using wet-etching, with liquid agents used to dissolve little holes – beneficial to provide the flexibility [needed]."

But the "innovation this time around is in the top part – where we create laser-cut holes, which are smaller micro-holes." This allows for a " flatter and more rigid" result where the display flexes down the centre of the device. And that's what lessens the visibility of the crease.

Samsung has literally created folding metal for this generation of foldable, in both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra. So you can see why it felt like overcoming the impossible – and earned its secret 'Saving Private Ryan' namesake.

Bolstered battery

There's a lot more going on with these new folding phones, though, as I previously reported that they're the first Samsung devices to deploy a silicon-carbon battery (Si-C) technology – long used by competitors and increasingly demanded by would-be customers for its enhanced life.

Samsung has deeply invested research and development into this new technology: "We have continued to observe the demand for silicon-carbon. But Samsung holds ourselves to the highest standard for many qualities, including [battery] stability," said Yang.

The Z Fold 8's increase to a 5000mAh capacity in a slimmer overall design "required more than a new material alone. On the anode side, a thin carbon coating helps stability. On the cathode side, a high-porosity separator [is used] to improve ion mobility.

"This was not just about changing the anode material itself," but a full project to "cover end-to-end components to meet spec and standard. It may look as though it’s only about changing the anode material – but it’s more [than that]", confirmed Yang, unable to share some of the secretive aspects of Samsung's solution.

New display format

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is Samsung's big bet on a new format, though, offering a 16:10 exterior aspect and 4:3 interior – that's unlike anything Android has seen before. It's widely expected to be the format that Apple will use in its iPhone Ultra later this year.

So why now for such a change? "We're able to observe changing use case patterns over seven years – and made the decision by closely monitoring user data and insights. Over time [there's been an] increase in video content consumption, so have introduced an aspect ratio to best fit."

When pressed if Samsung will be selling this AMOLED panel to other companies, without explicitly citing Apple, Yang was reluctant to answer directly: "We're not sure if it's an IP (intellectual property) that can be commoditised – so don’t know whether that will become the future."

Notably, none of Samsung's trio of 2026 foldables feature the Privacy Display feature that rolled out in the Galaxy S26 Ultra at the beginning of this year. That display hardware can switch off certain pixels in real-time to hide notifications or specific apps' visibility to would-be snoopers, creating a black of privacy screen effect.

"We're happy to see the excitement around Privacy Display. Whenever we design and engineer for our devices, we base it on the target market. There are priorities and different considerations. The biggest priority here [in the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra] was to take durability to the next level."

I've been using a Galaxy Z Fold 8 since the Unpacked summer showcase and it's an impressive piece of kit, with a hinge that feels different to any before it. "You felt that correctly," said Yang.

"The 8 and 8 Ultra have different hinge architectures. The Ultra is to maximise productivity, so the hinge is slimmer. The 8 is about content consumption, so makes the [unfolding] experience more natural and seamless – so we incorporated a hinge that’s smoother and lighter to open."

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 pre-orders are live now, with the on-sale date expected from 4 August. Making the impossible possible, these new foldables are a great achievement – and Yang's detailed explanations show just how much work has gone on behind the scenes in producing something truly unique in this market.

Just for the record, we're not here to put planks down. Quite the opposite. They're one of the best core exercises you can do. In fact, during a recent assessment, I held a two-minute plank and scored 'excellent' for core endurance, an important marker of spinal health, balance and reducing your risk of injury as we age.

But once I'd ticked that box, it got me thinking: what next? If you want to keep challenging your core while also improving grip strength, shoulder stability and body control, hanging leg raises are hard to beat.

Unlike planks, hanging leg raises challenge your entire body. Simply hanging from the bar demands grip and forearm strength, shoulder stability and upper-back engagement - and that's before you've even lifted your legs.

Then, as you raise your knees towards your chest, your core has to contract dynamically through a full range of motion, making it one of the most demanding bodyweight exercises you can do.

Why hanging leg raises work

The hanging leg raise is far more than just another core exercise to add to your workout. Unlike floor-based ab exercises, it forces your core to work against gravity as you lift your legs, creating significant tension throughout your midsection while also challenging your grip, shoulders, and upper back.

Because you're hanging from a bar, your body has to stabilise from the moment your feet leave the floor. Your abs are coordinating with your hip flexors, lats and shoulders to keep your body under control throughout every rep.

It's this full-body demand that makes hanging leg raises such an effective exercise for building unbelievable core strength.

The sensation is another benefit: simply hanging from the bar feels incredibly satisfying, giving your shoulders, upper back and spine a chance to decompress and lengthen. While that's no substitute for mobility work, it's one of the reasons this exercise feels so good to perform.

How to do the hanging leg raise

• Grip a pull-up bar with your palms facing away from you and your hands roughly shoulder-width apart.
• Lift your feet off the floor and allow your body to hang with your arms fully extended. Pull your shoulders down away from your ears, brace your core and squeeze your glutes to create tension through your body.
• Keeping your upper body as still as possible, slowly raise your knees towards your chest by curling your pelvis underneath you. Pause briefly at the top, then lower your legs with control until you return to the starting position. Repeat.

Top tip: Don't use momentum to swing your legs up. Instead, move slowly and with control, bringing your knees towards your chest while deliberately curling your pelvis underneath you. Think about rolling your hips up rather than simply lifting your legs. This keeps the tension on your abs and makes every rep far more effective.

Progression and alternatives to try

When adding hanging leg raises to your workouts, start with three sets of 5-10 controlled reps. The goal is to brace your entire core, keep your body as still as possible and slowly curl your knees towards your chest.

Done properly, this core exercise develops core strength, body control and the kind of functional fitness that carries over into everything from pull-ups, deadlifts and squats to everyday movement.

If you're swinging around like you're back on the school monkey bars, start by mastering the dead hang instead. Building your grip strength and shoulder stability first will make hanging leg raises far more controlled and much more effective.

To do, hang as still as possible for 20–30 seconds before progressing to an active hang, where you pull your shoulders down slightly by setting your scapulae, engage your upper back and gently tilt your pelvis underneath you.

Aim to hold this position and keep as still as possible for 20–30 seconds. Once you can control both positions, start introducing the knee raise.

It's important not to rush toward the hardest variation, no matter how tempting it might be. As with anything worth doing, mastering each stage first will give you the best results and help build a bulletproof core.

At 57, Hugh Jackman isn't relying on his Wolverine days to stay in shape. His latest workout reel proves he's still putting in the work, and evidently, it doesn't come easily, even for Hollywood actors.

In his version, Jackman places his hands on two weight plates, allowing his chest to travel lower than usual. The increased range of motion places his chest muscles under a greater stretch, making every rep more demanding.

If that wasn't enough, he also puts heavy chains across his neck to increase the resistance. His chest, shoulders, triceps and core all have to work harder to keep his body rigid from shoulders to heels.

It's an incredibly challenging variation, and one that immediately caught our attention. "Best to stay fit," Jackman wrote alongside his video, "rather than chase it. I remind myself of this every time Beth [Lewis, his trainer] wants another set."

Lewis replied: "Looking so good! Not only staying fit but always kicking it up a notch," before explaining that using "accommodating resistance", such as chains, "can be super helpful for developing power due to the decreased load at the bottom of the movement."

Why deficit chain push-ups?

Think push-ups are boring? Think again. Jackman's variation proves there's plenty of room to make the classic bodyweight move more exciting.

Elevating the hands increases the range of motion, allowing the chest to travel lower than it would during a standard push-up. This places the pecs under greater tension while challenging the shoulders, triceps, core and serratus anterior - a muscle that helps stabilise the shoulder blades during pushing movements.

It also demands excellent core control, shoulder stability and strict body positioning. If your hips sag or your shoulder blades lose control, the exercise quickly stops looking like strength training. Add heavy chains across your back, and it becomes a completely different challenge.

While most people won't have chains lying around at home, the principles behind the exercise are worth applying. Increasing the range of motion is a simple way to make bodyweight push-ups more demanding without relying solely on extra weight. Better still, it builds upper-body strength and shoulder stability that carry over into everyday life.

As we get older, maintaining the ability to push ourselves up from the floor becomes an important marker of functional strength and independence - what Lewis neatly sums up as being "good for vanity today, and function 30 years from now."

How to do deficit chain push-ups

• Set up two weight plates on the floor, so your hands are shoulder-width apart.
• Drape one or more chains across your upper back so they're evenly balanced, then get into a high plank position, with your hands in line with your shoulders and your body in a straight line from head to toe.
• Place your hands on the elevated surface and brace your core and glutes before lowering your chest towards the ground.
• Continue lowering until below hand level, feeling a deep stretch through your chest.
• Drive through your palms to press back to the starting position, keeping your body in one straight line throughout.

Don't have chains?

While the chains certainly make Jackman's workout look impressive, they're not essential. Resistance bands - or even a carefully balanced weight plate across your upper back, if you have someone to help position it can make the exercise significantly more challenging.

As Lewis puts it: "When it gets easy, add load... duh. Refuse to dial it in!"

To use a resistance band, loop it around your upper back and hold each end beneath your palms as you grip the weight plates. As you press back up, the band stretches, increasing the resistance toward the top of the movement and making the lockout even more demanding.

Like the chain variation, the band challenges your chest, shoulders, triceps and core while encouraging you to maintain good body position throughout every rep.

Better still, resistance bands are inexpensive, portable and an easy way to progress one of the best bodyweight exercises without needing a gym.

I'm a child of Nintendo, and even if I won't always defend every generation of the franchise, it's always fun to remind myself that I've played Pokémon right since its very first games. The games have been long-term companions, but that doesn't mean I'm not open to new options.

Those of my generation have long known about a rivalry between Pokémon and Digimon, but the reality is that the former clearly won the war. It's a way bigger deal and has way more cultural capital – but that doesn't mean that Digimon's been left behind. Rather, it's just branched out in different ways.

I saw a decent amount of praise for Digimon Story Time Stranger when it came out last year, but didn't have a chance to play it – until now. A Switch 2 version of the game came out this month, and that's given me the opportunity to see what this parallel monster-collecting game has to offer.

I've been really pleasantly surprised by the setup of Time Stranger, which is actually way more like a Persona game than it is a Pokémon one. You're dropped into a funky sci-fi plot set in Tokyo and involving time travel without being too complicated, and soon introduced to Digimon, which are basically monsters that come into the real world from a parallel virtual one.

What I didn't realise is that Time Stranger, a bit like the Persona games, doesn't have linear evolution for its monsters. When you level up a Pokémon far enough, it'll evolve, but other than a few exceptions like Eevee, it'll always do so into the same new Pokémon. Not so in the world of Digimon – most monsters have a few forms they can turn into, turning the whole list of them into a sort of web that you can explore over time.

That one twist is enough to hook me – in Pokémon, unless you're aiming at competitive play, there's never a good reason to keep a Pokémon non-evolved, but in Time Stranger I'm already holding off to earn more stats and unlock new, more interesting-looking evolutions.

All of that sits outside of the core gameplay, too, which involves running around exploring environments and fighting turn-based battles. This uses a fairly familiar rock-paper-scissors system alongside some elemental twists, but it's really simple to learn, with a battle-speed toggle that makes less important fights far quicker.

I always like it when time-savers like that are available from the get-go, and after about three hours of gameplay I'm clearly just hitting the game's main stride, with new areas to access and the story developing at a decent clip. Another major advantage over Pokémon? It's got actual voice acting, even if some of it's a little over-the-top.

The game hits Switch 2 with both a quality mode that aims for 30fps at higher resolutions, and a 60fps at 1080p option. Neither really sticks to its target all that well, but I've found the 60fps mode much more enjoyable, so that's what I've been going with.

During the height of a UK heatwave, I was very kindly invited to the Summer of Indulge Garden Party with Russell Hobbs. To say I had a great time sitting outside, listening to music and snacking on charcuterie would be an understatement, but I also got to see Russell Hobbs’ new Indulge collection in action.

As mentioned, I got to see and try the new Indulge appliances for myself, and I was thoroughly impressed. Starting with coffee, I tried the Russell Hobbs Cafe Genie Espresso Machine, and was immediately caught by its design.

Coffee machines have gotten bulkier in size and stature, but Russell Hobbs Cafe Genie Espresso Machine is surprisingly petite, and sat proudly on the event’s coffee bar. It has a touch control panel sitting at the top of the machine where you can adjust your settings and click through popular drinks, like cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites and more.

The Russell Hobbs Cafe Genie Espresso Machine has a built-in milk system that automatically steams and froths milk when you pick a milk-based drink. But I was more interested in trying its espresso which I did in the form of a non-alcoholic espresso martini.

With its 20-bar pressure pump, the Russell Hobbs Cafe Genie Espresso Machine pulled coffee in little to no time, and it had a deep, rich flavour. Of course, a lot of this is to do with the quality of the coffee beans of which the machine is compatible with loose coffee grounds or Nespresso Original pods.

For £229.99, the Russell Hobbs Cafe Genie Espresso Machine isn’t too expensive either, compared to other coffee manufacturers. Having tried it, I’d say it’s good value for money, and it looks and feels like a high quality product that’ll definitely find its way into many kitchens.

The next appliance I tried was the JuiceLuxe Juicer. I’ve been wanting a juicer for a long time, and I think the JuiceLuxe Juicer might have won me over. It features a 62mm juicing tube at the top where you insert your fruit and vegetables, and it has a non-drop sprout to dispense your juice.

I can’t get enough of ginger at the moment, so I got a ginger, orange and carrot juice and was impressed by how fast the JuiceLuxe Juicer turned everything around with its 400W motor. It tackled hard carrots and oversized oranges with no problem, and I was surprised by how tidy it was, as normally juicers can get messy.

Last but certainly not least, I made my way over to the ice cream station to see the Chillluxe Ice Cream Maker in action. Sadly for me, I’m lactose intolerant so couldn’t try any of the ice cream but I did get to see the ice cream maker at work.

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was when in operation. Of course, I was at an event with a lot of people and a DJ playing, but the Chillluxe wasn’t too loud. While you still need to pre-freeze your mixture the night before, the Chillluxe whizzes up ice cream, sorbet, gelato and more in a matter of minutes.

Again, I didn’t try the finished product, but I saw lots of happy people with creamy, almost soft serve-consistency ice cream, and it looked delicious! With so many ice cream makers on the market right now, it can be hard to pick the right one for you, but the Chillluxe from Russell Hobbs is a great budget choice at £159.99.

The UK government has announced that plug-in solar panels will be legal in the UK from next month, following years of waiting for the rules to change. According to research conducted by the government, the move could help homeowners save around £70-£110 a year on their energy bills.

That said, there are a few requirements to note. Plug-in solar setups must be limited to 800W of output, and they can't currently "import electrical energy" from your home to store and use at a later date. The government has also said that you shouldn't need professional installation or planning permission, making these systems much easier to set up and potentially a great option for renters.

We're still waiting to see exactly when companies will start launching their plug-in solar kits in the UK, but after a quick look around, a few manufacturers have already got products on the way. I've listed the ones I've got my eye on below.

As mentioned, the current rules don't allow you to import energy from your home and store it for later use, suggesting battery storage could hopefully be the next big step for plug-in solar.

Aaron James Darvill, Strategic Sales Director at Anker Solix, explained that "Plug-in solar generates the most electricity during the day, but most households use the most energy in the evening. Without battery storage, consumers can't store surplus energy to use when they need it most, limiting the savings and flexibility the technology can deliver."

Anker Solix launched its Solarbank 4 E5000 Pro in Europe a few months ago as a combined solar and battery storage system. This makes it one of the more interesting options that isn't quite legal under the current UK rules, but hopefully that will change in the near future as plug-in solar becomes more widely adopted.

2026 is shaping up to have the hottest summer on record for the UK. We’ve been hit by multiple heatwaves, and the only thing that’s got me through being outside in the sun is a handheld fan.

Handheld fans have been around for years, but it feels like 2026 has seen a huge surge in popularity for them. Instead of cheap, flimsy portable fans that are usually on the market, higher end brands have launched their own models this year, including the likes of Shark and Dyson.

If you’ve finally decided to bite the bullet and buy yourself a handheld fan, here are the five best handheld fans on the market right now for on-the-go cooling.

1. Shark ChillPill

The handheld fan that started the revolution has got to be the Shark ChillPill. This 3-in-1 fan launched in March 2026, offering portable cooling in a stylish design. 5. Aecooly Cold Air Ultra

Misting is quite a tricky thing to add to a handheld fan as they have a small size and need constant refills. But the best misting handheld fan I’ve found is the Aecooly Cold Air Ultra. It has a wide mouth water tank which gives up to eight minutes of misting with one refill.

The Aecooly Cold Air Ultra has a digital display which easily flicks through its misting and fan settings. It generates speeds and projection of up to 82ft/s and is seriously cooling. It’s slightly bulkier than the other models on this list but it’s easy to hold and travel with.

Samsung has just updated its Galaxy Z Flip, alongside the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 (the wide model) and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. But in the world of flip phones, Samsung faces a big rival in the form of Motorola and its Razr family.

The Motorola Razr 70 Ultra was announced earlier in the year, and it has something in common with Samsung's phone: neither of these devices changed significantly from the previous generation. On one hand, that might point to smartphone stagnation. On the other hand, it could just be that phones don't need to be updated every year.

With that said, both these phones also increased their prices, something that's a trend in tech right now. With that in back of mind, and having used both of these phones ahead of Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event, just how do they compare – and which one should you buy?

Price

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 has just been announced, with a launch price of £1149 for the 256GB version. Currently, I don't have confirmed pricing for the US or other regions.

It's expected that pre-orders will open immediately, with general sales from 4 August.

The Razr 70 Ultra launched at £1199 in May 2026 and it's still listed at that price, although Motorola is offering free Buds Loop if you order direct. Note that this is for the 512GB version, so technically, it's 'cheaper' than the Galaxy Z Flip 8. Prices have been really stable, with no discounts so far.

In the USA the (differently named, but effectively the same device) Razr Ultra 2026 is priced at $1499, while in Australia it's AU$1999 (albeit for the 256GB model in that instance).

Design

With neither of these phones changing much generation on generation, I could direct you to my comparison of the Z Flip 7 and Razr 70 Ultra – as much is going to be the same. The design of the new Samsung phone is essentially the same as it was before, but it's now only 6.1mm thick and drops to 180g in weight.

It remains more compact than the Razr, which is 7.19mm thick when unfolded and weighs in at 199g. That's close to 20g difference in weight, but it's the overall bulk that separates these phones – and you don't get more screen space on the Motorola as a result of the increased size (but you do get something else as I'll get to below).

The design language is different, too, with Samsung's approach being more industrial. Flat sides meet a flat back, while the Razr 70 Ultra hangs on to some curves. Samsung has made a tiny adjustment in the Flip 8, with a bevelled edge that makes it a little easier to open than the previous model. Motorola, thanks to its slightly more rounded frame, has always been a little easier to flip open.

While Samsung sticks to a glass back on the Galaxy Z Flip 8, this is where the biggest point of difference comes in: Motorola remains committed to using unique colours and materials. The Razr 70 Ultra comes in Pantone Cocoa, which has a wood veneer finish, while the Pantone Orient Blue is an opulent Alcantara.

This lends a completely different feel to these devices. While they principally have a similar folding design, Motorola's Razr has a slightly warmer feel about it. Both will turn heads, but the Razr will draw more questions – and I applaud that.

Much as it was before, this is a choice between industrial precision from Samsung or a slightly more lifestyle look from Motorola. My only concern is that the Razr 70 Ultra comes in just two finishes, at the moment, which is fewer than previous years.

Samsung offers four colours – although one is a Samsung.com exclusive.

Displays

Motorola stole an early lead from Samsung with its cover display: while Samsung was still offering an odd-shaped window on the Galaxy Flip 5, Motorola's Razr wrapped it right around the cameras on the Razr 40 Ultra. That set a new trend, which now sees these two going head-to-head on the cover screen.

The playing field has levelled, with Samsung offering a 4.1-inch screen compared to Motorola's 4.0-incher. That fractional difference in size makes a difference, especially when you consider that Samsung's phone is smaller: the Razr has wider bezels around the edge. Again, Samsung's precision comes through here.

Motorola is known for pushing the display specs, though, and the Razr 70 Ultra has a 3000 nits cover screen with 165Hz refresh rate and high pixel count. Samsung hasn’t confirmed the Z Flip 8 specs at the time of writing, but to me it looked just like the previous version.

That applies to the main display too: the Z Flip 8 has a 6.9-inch internal display, while Motorola is 6.96-inches. Motorola offers 165Hz – although I'm not sure you'll ever use more than 120Hz – while it also has a peak brightness of 5000 nits.

Finally, Samsung's crease is a little less visible than Motorola's. That's about all that separates these displays, although Motorola probably retains the brightness advantage.

But there's one other levelling factor: Motorola's advantage has long been the ability to use apps in full on the cover screen. Samsung is now offering the same on the Z Flip 8, moving on from the widget-based experience that it previously offered. I compared a couple of apps and Samsung might just have the edge now, offering a little more visible app space.

Performance

If you're looking for stagnation, Motorola's decision to stick with the Snapdragon 8 Elite in 2026 (the same as 2025) might cost it: Samsung updates to the Gen 5 version (in the USA; it's Exynos 2600 in some other regions, including the UK).

But before you get too excited, it's not simply a case of 'newer is better': the Snapdragon 8 Elite remains powerful hardware and many prefer to have a Snapdragon in their phone. While I haven't been able to fully test the Galaxy Z Flip 8, previous tests on the Exynos 2600 suggested that it was outperformed by the older Snapdragon hardware in some areas.

But let's keep this in check: this isn't a gaming phone, so absolute performance probably doesn't matter. In that sense, what happens in the battery department is probably more important.

The Motorola Razr 70 Ultra has a 5000mAh battery, while Samsung sticks to 4300mAh. Samsung battery now uses silicon-carbon (Si-C) tech, which is the same as Motorola. Samsung's motivation for moving to Si-C seems to be to support the 45W charging, which is very welcome.

Motorola, meanwhile, offers 68W charging and, let's face it, that's a world apart from Samsung's offering. I found the battery life of the Razr 70 Ultra to be really solid.

Cameras

When the Motorola Razr 70 Ultra launched, all the talk was about the introduction of a 'LOFIC' sensor, the first time the tech had been used in a folding phone. That's designed to strengthen the performance of the main camera – and it's a pretty good performer.

It leads a trio of 50-megapixel cameras, including an ultrawide (that's a little blurry towards the edges) and a front camera (that's pretty inconsistent in my experience). It's a so-so camera experience.

Samsung doesn't appear to have made any changes to its camera in the Z Flip 8, so there's a 50-megapixel main, supported by a 12-megapixel ultrawide and a 10-megapixel selfie camera. Motorola wins on the spec sheet, but I can't really judge which is better until I get to test them both.

There are clever features, like multiple ways to use the external display, the option to use the rear cameras for selfies, as well as clever features like camcorder mode and twist-to-zoom on the Motorola device.

Both lack a telephoto camera, which is the biggest downside at this price point when compared to a regular non-folding phone.

Software and support

This section is worth paying attention to and we'll start with the fact that Samsung offers 7 years of software support for its flagship devices, while Motorola has only promised three OS updates and 5 years of security updates on the Razr 70 Ultra. Whichever way you cut it, Samsung is better in this regard.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 has the benefit of launching on Android 17 (almost the first phone to offer it – the Google Pixel literally updated the week before launch), along with One UI 9. During my time exploring the Z Flip 8, I didn't spot huge changes – except for the cover display features that I've already mentioned.

Samsung with One UI remains one of the best experiences on Android – and that remains the case for the Galaxy Z Flip 8. Motorola, on the other hand ,isn't quite as slick.

The move to Hello UI has seen Motorola introduce a lot of preinstalled apps, while making changes to insert Moto AI in places you might not want it. Most annoying is the attempt to shoehorn a news feed into the apps tray, along with a search function that can draw on Perplexity to give you more waffly answers.

Thankfully you can turn off a lot of these intrusions, but it does take some effort. Samsung instead offers Galaxy AI, which always gets a high billing, but doesn't appear to offer much more than Google's Gemini – which both these phones offer as standard.

The caveat with Samsung's AI is that you have to use the Samsung Keyboard to get it to function – if you choose to use Google Gboard, for example, you basically void the Galaxy AI features.

Which should you buy: Samsung or Motorola?

Samsung has a couple of things stacked in its favour: it has a tighter and more compact design, which is lighter; it offers longer software support; and many will prefer the One UI experience over Motorola's Hello UI. But for the price, you get half the storage.

Motorola offers more unique finishes, with higher spec displays in some areas and a battery that's significantly higher capacity, with much faster charging. Motorola also offers 512GB storage for only a little more cash, so it's also better value for money.

But between all these things, I think it boils down to two factors: pick Samsung if you want the more compact device with a design that's slightly sharper; pick Motorola if you'd rather have longer battery life.

Okay, so it wasn't the best-kept secret in world history – Samsung had been openly teasing the new shape of its Galaxy Z Fold 8 for a couple of weeks. So, even without the many leaks that preceded it, we had a pretty good sense that the main Z Fold phone would be getting a new look.

Still, it's one thing to see leaks and another to get an entire Galaxy Unpacked event to check the phone out, and then the hands-on thoughts of our Tech editor, Mike Lowe. The phone looks like it's making a great impression on people in the first instance, although we'll doubtless get more context in the next few weeks.

I'll admit, though, that I've been a bit of a sceptic. The steep price tag attached to foldables makes them a non-starter for me, and I didn't see why a squatter design would change that. What I didn't expect was one moment in Samsung's presentation when they showed the phone opened up, but not in landscape mode – using a portrait orientation instead.

The photo at the top of this article shows that moment exactly, and that Samsung was using it to underline how the Z Fold 8 could be a great little e-reader alongside all the other more phone-like tools it offers. My surprise? I'm won over, at least moreso than before.

I've tested every Kindle released in the last few years, and I still regularly use the Kindle Paperwhite when I'm travelling, to cut down on the weight of a book (especially if I'm reading something chunky). Still, while I like an e-reader as much as the next reader, I'm mostly doing it for that weight reason.

So, if I had a phone that could be as satisfying to hold and as easy to read with, that would indeed be pretty tempting. There's a lot to wonder about in terms of ergonomics, still, and the biggest question for me would be how reliably I'd be able to read on the Z Fold 8 without worrying about battery life, but the concept it still quite a winning one.

The simple reality is that as long as these foldables stay this expensive, there's no way I'd ever commit to them – at £1,699, I just don't think the Z Fold 8 having a more adaptable aspect ratio is enough to move the needle. Still, this is the first time in a few years that I've even really perked my ears up at all in this area.

I'll be super interested in the folding iPhone we're likely getting later this year, but again will almost certainly never get my hands on one, if the rumoured pricing is to be remotely believed. Perhaps in half a decade, though, when folding phones are even more widespread, and the memory crisis has hopefully abated, I could end up not needing a Kindle at all – one less device is rarely a bad thing.

Today, Samsung used its Unpacked summer 2026 event to reveal a host of new devices – including, most critically of all, the brand new Galaxy Z Fold 8.

While the foldable's naming convention follows suit with its predecessor, the Z Fold 7, the new device is anything but – a 16:10 external aspect ratio, with a 4:3 aspect panel within.

That's an important difference to the typically 'narrow and tall' foldables of recent years, in particular because Android devices have consistently swerved a 4:3 aspect ratio – unlike Apple's iPad, which is precisely that form.

Has Samsung effectively just shown us the iPhone Ultra, expected to be revealed in September of this year? In a way, yes.

How's that the case? Well, Samsung is the producer of AMOLED panels – Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode – and it's largely expected that Apple will be a customer of this new panel.

Therefore this size and scale – 5.5-inches on the exterior at 16:10; 7.6-inches on the internal at 4:3 – is widely expected to be the very format that Apple also brings into the world of foldables.

But Apple has its own ecosystem, of course, with iOS and iPad OS fundamental to iPhone and iPad products – unlike Google's Android system, on which Samsung is based (with its own One UI interface).

That's the area where Apple could really excel in a way that Android hasn't quite presented in foldables as yet. Indeed, Samsung hasn't presented specific differences that the Z Fold 8 can offer compared to its Ultra, for example.

All that said, however, while Samsung may well sell the panel to Apple, it's not selling all of its research and development. And, with eight years of experience under its belt – the first Z Fold launched in 2019 – the South Korean maker has a lot to offer.

Indeed, the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra both utilise what Samsung is calling Flex Titanium technology. Which is literally a laser-etched micro-thin layer of titanium that sits beneath the panel, ensuring flatness, rigidity and negating the crease more than any product of this type before it. Apple's not going to have that straight out of the gate.

None of this is guaranteed, of course, as it's all speculative. But it makes sense: if Samsung can claim to be first, with Apple doubling down on the new foldable format, then it ought to gather greater momentum. That's a winner for both sides – and all of us, the intended users.

With the Z Fold 8 confirmed to be priced from £1,699 in the UK, however, it remains a pricey piece of kit. Many think Apple's effort will be nearer to the £1,999 mark – which could be too much of a hurdle for many buyers. Guess we'll have to wait and see what comes later this year.

There's a big old genre of gaming that I've never quite got to grips with, despite a lot of trying, and that's skating games. I've never been a real-life skater, but the fashion and attitude has always been attractive, and that's meant I've tried over and over to get into giants of the genre like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, without ever really finding my jam.

Little did I know that the way I'd finally get my satisfaction was to swap skating on a board for literally tricking an entire train – the barmy premise of Denshattack!, which is out now on basically all platforms. It sees you take on the role of a train driver in a world where trains can do things you'd basically never believe outside of an anime.

Luckily, anime is very much the aesthetic here, as you make your way through a sci-fi future Japan full of abandoned train tracks. This is a world where rebels pilot trains in a sport called Denshattack, and do so much like skaters, pulling off wild tricks, rail grinds and more.

You drop into a course with a set objective, whether it's to make it to the end of a more linear one or to get a certain amount of combo points in an open-ended arena, and from there it's all about free-styling your way to success. With a variety of button presses, you can jump, drift around corners, and pull off tricks in the air, and chaining these moves together is your best path to profit and speed.

Each track also has a range of secrets to find, from collectables to interactions with the passing world (using your train's horn to startle some birds, for instance). These give you stretch goals to keep an eye out for as you race, and they're consistently fun to achieve.

The aesthetic is also great, all cel-shaded and stylish, with really colourful stages that zip past with an impressive sense of speed. Back in the days of the Switch 1, I think this is a textbook example of a game that might have been really compromised either by blurry visuals or a lower frame rate, but on the Switch 2 it's been a buttery-smooth joy both in docked and handheld mode.

I didn't expect it to get its hooks into me, but a few hours in I'm really loving the core design choices at play. The game's welcoming if you just want to experience its pulpy story and don't have that much manual skill to get high scores, but the skill ceiling is incredibly high for those who want to find it.

This is one of those games that you have to see in motion to really appreciate, and I'm confident that watching the trailer I embedded further up this story will go a long way towards clarifying whether it's for you. Don't be put off by the story, either – it's littered with skip buttons if you just want to get to the train-skating.

That's what I've been doing, honestly, and I've had a stellar time doing it. Weird games are the way forward, I think, and this is a great example of a low-cost game that deserves to build up a cult audience.

When you're looking for one of the best bean-to-cup coffee machines, it's easy to get carried away by the premium models. The most expensive machines often promise more features, smarter technology and a longer list of drinks, but do you really need to spend that much to get a great cup of coffee at home? Not necessarily.

As a result, I've been looking at some of the more affordable options from big-name brands and found that you can get an impressive coffee experience without paying top prices. I've already covered the three affordable De'Longhi coffee machines I'd buy, and now it's time to look at Sage.

Why don't you always need to buy the most expensive coffee machine?

Sage is a brand that really leans into premium coffee machines, with more advanced features and added convenience the further up the range you go. That's why two of the three more affordable options in my list above don't come with built-in grinders. However, that doesn't mean you can't get a really high-quality coffee machine from Sage without spending a fortune.

One thing I also want to mention is that not everyone realises Sage and Breville are essentially the same brand. Sage products are sold under the Sage name in the UK and Europe, whilst Breville is the name used in other markets. As a result, you'll often find very similar machines and technology across both brands, although product names and specific features can vary depending on the region.

So, if the Sage options above are still outside your budget, I'd recommend taking a look at Breville models available in your market. They could be a great alternative if you're after a similar coffee-making experience without the premium price tag.

Having a smart plug in your house is invaluable, especially if you’re just starting out with creating your own smart home. But there are some gadgets you should never use with a smart plug – here’s why.

Plugging non-smart appliances into a smart plug means you can use them remotely, set timers, and turn things on and off using your voice. Most importantly, you can add smart technology to your home in an affordable way, without having to replace all of your devices.

Despite being fairly underrated, many people tout smart plugs as someone you can use all over your home. However, there are definitely appliances that they work best with, like lights if you haven’t upgraded to smart bulbs yet, and TVs if you want to save energy by taking it off of standby.

But there are five appliances you should never use with a smart plug – some because it isn’t safe, and others where there isn’t much point and you’re having to do more work to use them in this way.

1. Coffee machines

I’ve tested a few smart plugs for T3, and the main appliances I found to not work well with them are bean to cup coffee machines and kettles. Of course, it’ll depend on the type of coffee maker or kettle you have, but in general, you still need to manually select a drink or temperature in order for your machine to work.

In this instance, a smart plug can ‘wake up’ your coffee machine and kettle, so when you get downstairs in the morning, you can simply tap your drink of choice, and push down your kettle’s lever. But this really isn’t saving you very much time. Instead, you can get coffee machines and smart kettles that come with their own apps and Wi-Fi connectivity, so you can use them remotely in a more cohesive way.

2. Toasters

If you want my advice, I’d avoid using smart plugs with any kind of kitchen appliance, especially toasters. Similar to kettles, toasters still require manual assistance as you need to add your bread and push the lever down. Some may put bread in the toaster the night beforehand, but there’s still that manual action required to get the toaster to actually toast your bread.

3. Blenders

Again, depending on the type of blender you have, there’s still some manual operation needed for it to make your morning smoothie. Regardless of whether you add your ingredients the night before and attach it to your blender, some models require you to press buttons and in the case of Nurtibullets, you have to physically push down the blender to activate the blade.

4. Heaters

If you take any advice from this list, it’s that you should never use a heater with a smart plug – or any kind of appliance that generates heat. Heaters use a large amount of electricity, and this can exceed smart plug limits. In fact, heater manuals strictly dissuade users from using them in extension cords or smart plugs.

The main safety concern here is if the electricity and wattage between a heater and smart plug isn’t compatible – more on this below – this can cause the smart plug to short circuit which can cause an electrical fire.

5. Appliances over 1500W

Most smart plugs are rated between 10 to 13 amps, so any appliance that exceeds this limit shouldn’t be used with a smart plug as it becomes a safety concern. I’d recommend avoiding plugging anything into a smart plug that uses over 1500W of power, especially large appliances, like fridges, washing machines, tumble dryers and air conditioners.

72 Hours

• Streaming on: Netflix from 24 July

This looks like about as much of a throwback comedy as you can reasonably expect from a big streaming service right now – Netflix is going broad-brush with a Kevin Hart movie about blokey exploits. He stars as a middle-aged man who finds himself accidentally added to the messaging group of a bunch of younger guys going on a stag trip.

He decides to throw caution to the wind and turn up to see what happens, and from there has what looks like a fairly wild three days. It seems fairly obviously inspired by The Hangover and its sequels, but with that age-gap dynamic providing a twist. Ridiculous, for sure, but possibly some fun low-maintenance silliness for an evening later this week.

Ransom County: Season 2

• Streaming on: Netflix from 23 July

When this show's first season came out, I said that it looked like a direct rival to the Yellowstone dynasty being built by the folks at Paramount+, and I stand by that comparison now that Ransom Canyon has an imminent second season. The show continues to focus on similar dynamics and storylines, giving us an insight into the complicated life of a rancher.

That said, there are some important differences – namely, that this show is much more focused on the relationships and love lives of its characters, and less on the politics and brutality of land ownership and disputes. So, again, it's a pretty low-maintenance watch, and if you enjoyed the first season, you'll doubtless be pleased to see it return.

The Wild Robot

• Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video from 24 July

This one's not a Prime Original, but in a lean week for Amazon's streamer, it's a pretty fantastic addition, especially for family viewing. Telling the story of a long-lost robot awakening into a world full of animals and trying to work out what its place in that tableau might be, it's a beautiful story.

It's got all the touchpoints you might want right now, including a focus on the dangers of technology compared to our natural roots, but also a touching optimism. Plus, the art style of its 3D animation is really gorgeous, with designs that are almost like painting shifting in front of your eyes.

When it comes to the best air fryers, one brand name always stands out amongst the rest – Ninja. Ninja has become well known for its wide range of kitchen appliances, but its air fryers are some of the best you can buy, due to their impressive technology and unique designs.

Cuisinart is one of my favourite appliance brands, and it’s really stepped up its game in the past few years, especially in the air fryer department. The brand’s take on the Ninja Crispi is the Cuisinart ClearView Glass 3.8L Air Fryer which comes with six pre-sets, a sleek design, and is priced at £99.99.

Where the Cuisinart ClearView Glass 3.8L Air Fryer differs from the Ninja Crispi is it has more viewing windows. While the main cooking container is completely glass so you can see your food’s cooking progress, the Cuisinart ClearView Glass 3.8L Air Fryer has top and front windows so you can watch your food from multiple angles.

2. Dreame Tasti 5-in-1 Portable Air Fryer

Another portable, glass air fryer, the Dreame Tasti uses 3D hot air technology to cook your food, and comes with two container sizes. Compared to the others on this list, the Dreame Tasti looks almost identical to the Crispi but is the pricier option at £119 / $119.

3. Salter Crisp & Go Portable Air Fryer

Salter is another budget-friendly brand that is well known for its appliance dupes. The Salter Crisp & Go came out earlier this year, and at the cheap price of £89.99, so it’s the most affordable glass air fryer option you’ll find on the market.

The Salter Crispi has the same glass container and cooking pod as the Crispi, but where it differs is its controls are on the front of the pod rather than at the top like Ninja’s. It also comes with four presets, and a 360° viewing window for maximum visibility while you’re cooking.

I like to think I’m a very organised person, and for the most part, this statement is true. But my husband and I have recently started working from home on the same days which has made our house slightly more cluttered, and it’s apparently made me more forgetful of where I put my things.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been testing the new Google Home Speaker. It’s been extremely helpful with timers and reminders, but where it’s really helped me is remembering things for me – and not just where I’ve put my keys.

The Google Gemini Memory feature is incredibly useful for remembering things that you simply don’t have the brain capacity for at the time – we’ve all been there. For example, you can ask Gemini to remember where you left things, like your keys or purse, but you can also ask it to remember personal details, like people’s names, birthdays and other key details.

Gemini Memory can remember a wide range of things, including dates, names, family information and clothing sizes. For more personalised things, it can even log books or movies you want to try, gift ideas for a friend and even travel inspiration for a future holiday.

For example, by saying ‘Hey Google, remember I wanted to get my mum a hamper for her birthday’. Gemini ‘remembers’ this and when you ask ‘Hey Google, what should I get my mum for her birthday’, it should respond with what you’d previously mentioned.

Now, I know what you might be thinking – doesn’t this feature already exist? It’s true that other smart speakers, including Google’s previous Nest speakers and Amazon’s Echo line-up, have used this feature previously. But with the introduction of Gemini and it being more natural and conversational, Gemini’s Memory feature does exactly that and overtime.

When asking Gemini to remember something, it’ll log this information so you can ask about it again later. This is all done in a more natural way, and when prompted, Gemini can remember where you’ve left something, what family member is coming over, and even gift ideas suited to a friend that you’d previously discussed with Gemini.

As the Gemini Memory feature develops over time, Gemini builds a personalised profile for you based on the information you’ve shared with it. Not only does this make conversations flow easier but it means you don’t have to re-teach Gemini about who someone is and it continues chats that you’ve had in the past.

For anyone who thinks this would be sharing too much personal information, don’t worry. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t be getting Gemini to remember anything you deem too personal, like passwords or banking details as anyone can activate your speaker and ask about these things.

But you can also delete things from Gemini memory if needed. In the Google Home app, you can go to settings, select Personal Context and delete any saved details. You can also ask your Google speaker to ‘forget that I mentioned this’.

There's a lot of incredible ingenuity in the British watchmaking scene right now. While top name players like Christopher Ward lead the charge, there are a sea of smaller, independent brands putting out seriously impressive watches at great prices.

One example I stumbled upon late last year was the Abinger Nimrod. That's a well-spec'd watch with a go anywhere, do anything personality, for less than you'd think.

Now, the brand has unveiled the Phantom, which builds on that base with a stealthy new look. Let's jump in and take a closer look.

Abinger Phantom: key specs

Let's kick off with some specs. The model utilises a 38mm case diameter, and sits a mere 10.8mm tall. That houses a Miyota 9039 movement – a well-respected third-party movement which offers 42 hours of power reserve, and accuracy of -10/+15 seconds per day.

The piece is also water resistant to 200m, which is seriously impressive. That's dive watch levels of resistance, and feels unbelievable on a watch with these dimensions and at this price.

There is a bezel on the watch, though it's not a dive bezel. Instead, the watch uses a second hour scale, which allows the piece to act like a GMT watch.

You'll also find an FKM rubber strap on this model. That features a patterned top, designed to look like fabric, but it is, in fact all rubber. Also note that the pre-production model I've reviewed comes with a silver buckle, but that will be a matching black on the finished article.

What is the Abinger Phantom like on the wrist?

As you'd probably expect from the spec sheet, this model wears like a dream. The slim case height paired with the smaller diameter makes for an overall prospect which is just dreamy to wear.

I'm also a big fan of the rubber strap here. It suits the vibe of the watch – or, at the very least, how it has felt during my summer testing – with a lightweight nature. One gripe I have is that the fabric pattern and the wave pattern on the rear of the strap are both magnets for dirt and grime.

Still, that won't be enough to put me off. The 20mm lug width should make this a top pick for those who enjoy changing their watch strap, and I can see it looking great on a wide range of other options.

I'm also a big fan of the full lume dial. I'm rarely one to get dewy-eyed about lume performance – for most of us, it's not really a necessity in modern life.

Still, it's hard to ignore a full dial crafted from it, and it does look great here. In fact, I'd wager it's only really bested by another small British design in the Ontic Utility 40 Granite.

Is the Abinger Phantom worth the money?

Once the watch comes available for pre-orders on the 1st of August, you'll be able to snag it at an exclusive pre-order price of £699 (approx. €820 / US$950 / AU$1,350). Thereafter, the model will retail a little higher at £725 (approx. €850 / US$970 / AU$1,395).

It's worth noting that that's about £200 more costly than the original pre-order price of the Nimrod, though that does retail at £650, which closes the gap somewhat. Either way, it places this model in an interesting spot.

It's easy to compare watches around the £1,000 mark and watches around the £500 mark, but the space between it is hard to do well. I think this model is a good example of doing it right – enviable specs and a solid design with a decent story, and all at a price which undercuts some of the bigger boys in the space.

I felt similar feelings about the Clemence Munro, and I think that's pretty high praise indeed. I'm excited for the future of Abinger.

If you’ve been ditching your pyjamas in favour of sleeping naked during a heatwave, you’re making a huge mistake – here’s why.

As T3’s resident sleep expert, I’ve tried almost every sleep trick imaginable. But one thing I have yet to figure out is how to sleep comfortably during a heatwave. Like most of the UK right now, I’ve been blasting a fan and lying on top of the sheets to get some relief from the heat during the nighttime.

But one thing that’s hotly (no pun intended) debated is what you should wear to bed in a heatwave, with many people favouring sleeping in the nude. But according to GPs and sleep experts, you shouldn’t be sleeping naked in a heatwave for these three reasons.

1. It makes you sweatier

Sleeping naked can help you feel cooler at first but it can actually leave you feeling hotter and sweatier over the course of the night. As you sweat from the heat while you sleep, your sweat remains directly on your skin rather than caught by your clothes. This skin contact leaves you feeling hotter, sweatier and stickier which makes for an uncomfortable night’s sleep.

Having a layer of clothes, even a thin one, wicks sweat away from your body which helps cool you down. Loose-fitting pyjamas and cooling fabrics like bamboo or linen also allow air to circulate which minimises moisture, and prevents your bed sheets from getting too sweat-filled.

2. It disrupts your natural sleep cycle

To fall asleep, your core body temperature needs to drop, which is why sleep experts recommend sleeping in a cold room. But during a heatwave, your body remains warm which can prevent you from falling asleep. However, sleeping naked as a way to feel colder and kick start your sleep cycle, actually goes against your body’s natural circadian rhythm.

By sleeping naked, your body is being sent too many mixed signals – your sweat is making you hotter yet your absence of clothes is making you colder. It can all get a bit too confusing for your brain and body to keep track of which prevents you from falling asleep. Instead, focus on creating a comfortable sleep environment that keeps the heat out so your body can cool down – check out these 5 bedroom accessories to survive the heatwave for more details.

3. It can prevent recovery

While sleeping in a cold room has been found to be beneficial, sleeping in one naked and with a fan blasting cold air at you can prevent your body from recovering. Cold air – especially from a fan you’re using at night – can get into your joints and bones, and leave you feeling stiff and achy the next day. If you’ve been hitting the gym, this can prevent your muscles from recovering and cause cramping.

When you spend good money on one of the best kettles or best coffee machines, you want every cup to taste as good as possible. That means staying on top of cleaning and descaling, but it also means storing your coffee beans properly when they're not in the machine – something many of us are getting wrong without even realising.

According to Luke Dalton, coffee expert at Contact Coffee Co, one of the biggest mistakes coffee drinkers make is storing their beans next to the kettle, toaster or even the coffee machine itself.

It might seem like the most convenient place, but the heat and steam from these appliances can cause your coffee to lose its freshness much more quickly.

Luke explains: "The space beside the kettle is probably one of the most convenient places to keep coffee, but it can also be one of the worst. Every time the kettle boils, or the toaster heats up, the coffee may be exposed to changes in temperature and moisture. Over time, that can affect the oils and aromatic compounds responsible for much of its flavour."

As a result, even a premium bag of speciality coffee can start tasting flat, stale or unexpectedly bitter long before you've finished it.

Instead, Luke recommends storing your coffee in a cool, dry and dark cupboard that's away from appliances that regularly produce heat. Avoid cupboards directly above the oven, hob or dishwasher too, as these areas are also exposed to changing temperatures and humidity.

"The goal isn't to make the coffee cold," Luke adds. "It's to protect it from repeated changes in heat, light and moisture."

It's also worth paying attention to how you store the bag itself. If your coffee comes in a resealable bag with a one-way valve, keep using it. Before sealing it back up, gently press out any excess air without crushing the beans, then make sure the seal is fully closed. These small steps can make a surprising difference to how long your coffee stays fresh.

I love my video doorbell but ever since I went on holiday earlier this year, it’s been acting up. As I was away for two weeks, I turned off my Wi-Fi before I left so I wasn’t wasting any unnecessary energy, and this inadvertently turned off my video doorbell.

When I returned, my video doorbell didn’t immediately go back online. I had to completely reboot my Wi-Fi before recharging the doorbell battery, and updating a few things in the app. Finally, I was back online but the problems didn’t go away immediately.

Recently, I’ve been realising how delayed my video doorbell is with notifications and detection. As a hybrid worker, I work from home most days and I can see when people come to my door. I’ve started to realise that even though someone has come and gone in front of my doorbell, I only get a notification after the interaction, so at least five to 10 seconds after the event has occurred.

As you can imagine, this was becoming extremely annoying and I was missing deliveries, so I decided to look into why my doorbell was doing this and how to fix it.

Why is my video doorbell on a delay?

There are a few reasons why your video doorbell may be delayed. The main culprit is a slow or inconsistent Wi-Fi connection. Battery video doorbells tend to be affected by this more, as they’re powered by batteries and Wi-Fi which can take a few seconds to catch up.

Slow Wi-Fi doesn’t just affect your doorbell, either. Your smartphone can also be affected which causes even more of a delay. If you have any power settings on your phone and in your doorbell app – you can extend your doorbell’s battery life if you select certain settings – these can also impact how quickly your doorbell responds.

How to fix your video doorbell’s speed

To improve your video doorbell’s speed, go into your doorbell app and select your Device. Depending on the brand you have, you can check Device Health if you have a Ring or Blink doorbell or Signal Strength for others. Look at the RSSI section which stands for Received Signal Strength Indicator.

RSSI is shown in negatives. Your signal should be between -30 dBm and -67 dBm, but if it’s anything ‘over’ -67 dBm, this means your signal is very poor and this is likely affecting your doorbell’s response time. To fix this, you may want to move your router closer to your doorbell or invest in a mesh Wi-Fi system.

If your power settings are slowing things down, you’ll want to go to the Power Settings and update this. Alternatively, device updates could be impacting your app’s cache so you may want to clear this and reinstall the app to speed up your doorbell’s detection and notifications.

The best fans and portable air conditioners are like gold dust at the moment, with many selling out as the UK continues through another heatwave. Some people are even looking into installing permanent air conditioning at home, but if you're not ready for that kind of investment, there's another option I'd recommend first.

I've tested plenty of fans over the years at T3, from the Dyson Hot+Cool HF1 to the Dreo CF714S Air Circulator Fan, so I've had a chance to try almost every style on the market.

Whilst they all do the same basic job, I've found that it's often the extra features that separate the good from the great, which is why I've ended up becoming such a fan of misting fans.

Misting fans combine a standard electric fan with a fine water mist, creating an evaporative cooling effect. As the mist evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air, helping you feel noticeably cooler than you would with a standard fan alone.

If you've always dismissed them because you think they'll leave everything damp, don't worry. The mist is so fine that it evaporates almost instantly, leaving you with the cooling effect rather than soaking your furniture or floor.

There are now a few great misting fans to choose from. Shark is probably the best-known brand thanks to its FlexBreeze HydroGo and FlexBreeze Pro Mist, both of which we've reviewed very positively.

If you're after something more heavy-duty, Ego's FN1000E Misting Fan is another excellent option. It's larger and more expensive, but it's powerful enough to cool bigger spaces and works just as well indoors as it does outside.

After using a misting fan, I don't think I'd go back to a standard fan. Having the option to switch the misting function on and off gives you the best of both worlds, and on particularly hot days, the extra cooling makes a much bigger difference than I expected. If you've never tried one before, this is the type of fan I'd recommend looking at first.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that the UK has been experiencing an intense heatwave over the past few weeks. I’ve been writing about all things fans, air con and ways to keep cool for weeks now, and I’ve just found a double fan hack that everyone needs to try if they actually want to sleep in the heatwave.

As T3’s Home Editor, I’ve tested many fans over the years, so I have four knocking around my house right now. I’ve been using a fan in almost every room in my home, including my bedroom, despite the warnings that you shouldn’t sleep with a fan on at night.

Using a fan at night can have negative effects, like leaving your muscles feeling stiff, and exacerbating your allergies. Having a fan pointed directly at you can also be extremely annoying, uncomfortable and loud but I’ve been ignoring my own advice so I can actually get to sleep without overheating.

As my husband runs hotter than me, he’s recently insisted on sleeping with two fans on at night. I was initially against this idea as I don’t like to be too cold even in the midst of a heatwave. But while my bedroom currently sounds like I’m in a wind turbine, I’ve actually found using two fans at once extremely helpful, thanks to this double fan hack.

Why you should use two fans at night instead of one

If you have two or more fans at home, this is a handy trick that makes you and your bedroom feel cooler while preventing you from waking up feeling achy and sore. By using two fans together in the same room, you can create a crosswind or ‘vacuum effect’.

To do this, place one fan in front of an open window. The positioning of the first fan pushes the heat from your bedroom outside your window to cool it down, while also preventing any allergens like pollen from getting into your room.

With your second fan, position it anywhere inside your room, preferably pointing slightly away from you. The second fan circulates cool air around your room, so every area of your room, including you in your bed, is cooled evenly.

I’ve been using this hack for the past few weeks, and it’s made a world of difference to my sleep. I’m no longer waking up feeling sore and uncomfortable, and my room as a whole has felt much cooler. I actually know this to be a fact as I’ve been using a Dyson fan which shows the temperature in my room, and it significantly drops when I use this double fan trick compared to when I use it on its own.

I’ve found this crosswind effect to feel much cooler and the breeze itself feels more natural. I’m quite a hot sleeper but I’ve felt much less sweaty using this trick and my body as a whole is at a much more comfortable temperature.

It's no secret that last night's World Cup semi-final was a rollercoaster from start to finish. Whilst England fans were left heartbroken by the final whistle, it was a nail-biting match that had us hanging on until the very end.

Interestingly, new research from Beko found that just 25% of England fans have been watching the World Cup at home, with comfort and saving money cited as the main reasons. Most would rather head to the pub and experience the match with fellow fans, which made me wonder how our bodies react during a game like this when there are no outside influences.

So, for the semi-final, I stayed at home and let my Oura Ring 5 track what was happening to my body throughout the evening. With no noisy pub, no alcohol and no outside distractions, it was just me, the match and my smart ring data.

Before kick-off, everything looked pretty normal. I got home from work just after 6pm and, as it does most evenings, my heart rate gradually dropped as I relaxed. It gave me a good baseline before the football started...which didn't last long.

The moment the match kicked off, my heart rate jumped from 68bpm to just under 90bpm without me moving from the sofa. It was a reminder that your body doesn't really care whether you're running around a pitch or simply watching from your living room – the anticipation alone is enough to trigger a physical response.

When England scored, my heart rate climbed even higher, and then settled slightly as their defence stayed strong. The highest reading of the night was when Argentina took the lead, climbing from around 78bpm to 95bpm in a matter of seconds. As the extra time started dwindling and England's chances faded, my heart rate slowly evened out agin.

I was just as curious to see what effect the match had on my sleep.

The next morning, my Oura Ring gave me a sleep score of 63, which is well below my usual average. Even though I'd been in bed for almost eight hours, I only managed around five and a half hours of actual sleep, with a sleep efficiency of 75%.

The most telling metric was my restfulness score. After two hours of excitement, frustration and disappointment, my body clearly struggled to switch off properly. My sleep was lighter than usual, and I spent more time awake during the night than I normally would.

Whilst it's hardly a scientific study, it was fascinating to see just how much my body reacted to such a tense match, even from the comfort of my own sofa. From the spikes in heart rate during key moments to the noticeable dip in my sleep quality afterwards, it's clear that the emotional highs and lows of sport can have a real physical impact.

Over the past month or so, the UK has experienced some intense heatwaves. While keeping cool has been a top priority, so has taking care of your garden, as the high temperatures and bright sun can have damaging effects on your lawn, plants and decking.

My garden is full of plants – which I’ve been watering obsessively every morning to keep them happy and hydrated – but it’s also made up of wooden decking which is currently looking a little worse for wear. Whether it’s wooden or composite, decking can warp, shrink and splinter in the hot weather, and the surface can get excessively hot which can burn your feet and your pets’ paws.

To protect your decking from the next heatwave, here’s three ways to look after it, including when is the best time to make these improvements.

1. Create temporary shade

Unfortunately, you can’t pick up your decking and put it inside, so an easy way to stop it from getting too hot or drying out is to create temporary shade. There are a few ways you can do this, but as long as you’re blocking your deck from direct sunlight, it should be well protected.

One way to create temporary shade is using a gazebo, awning or parasol. If you don’t have this type of outdoor structure, you can make it even simpler and cover your decking with an outdoor rug. Not only will this prevent your deck from warping, but it’ll also protect your feet by keeping the temperature down.

Another handy way is rearranging or strategically placing your plants. Plants and trees can easily shade your garden while also getting the sunlight that they need – make sure you water them at the right times to keep them happy, too.

2. Apply a UV-blocking oil or stain

As mentioned, I have wooden decking at home and treating it has always been a task I’d rather avoid. But applying a UV-blocking treatment, like an oil or stain, can protect your decking from direct heat while also preventing drying and splintering – think of it as suncream for your deck!

Before you stain your decking with a UV blocker, make sure to treat it on a less hot day or in the early morning or late evening, ideally when the sun has gone down or hasn’t risen yet. This timing prevents the UV blocker from drying too quickly and leaving a film on top of your decking which does more harm than good.

3. Water your deck – yes, really

You’ve heard of watering your lawn, but have you heard of watering your deck? I hadn’t either, but it turns out you can cool your decking by giving it a quick rinse. Lightly spraying or misting your deck in the evening is most recommended and effective, as it cools the surface, prevents warping and expanding, and can wash away dirt and pollen after a long, hot day.

I wrote a couple of weeks ago about how, right at the height of the worst heatwave I can remember, my life had basically been saved by the arrival of a portable air conditioner from Dreo. That little (okay, quite big) unit has been a game-changer, completely saving my sleep and sanity, and the connected app tells me it's already run for over 300 hours since I got it.

Those are scary numbers for my electricity bill, though, and while it's still really quite toasty and hot this week in south London, the difference between 34 degrees and 28 degrees is striking. For one thing, it means aircon is no longer a total necessity, and it's seen me expand my approach to include a more relaxed (and affordable) cooling solution.

A good fan is never going to match the sheer cooling power of aircon, but it can get you way closer than you might think. I can now attest to that after a couple of weeks with the Dreo TurboPoly Fan 508S, my first pedestal fan in about a decade.

That length of time has seen fans jump forward into the future, with the 508S boasting Wi-Fi connectivity and smart lighting options to make it more than just a simple air-blower. It's also got a really quite nice modern design that makes it far less of an eye-sore in your room.

For the most part, I've used the 508S as a traditional fan, albeit one with 120 degrees of swivel in both horizontal and vertical directions. That means it's great at moving the air around a room, and it's telling that I've overwhelmingly used the lowest two of its settings (out of 10). The higher-end is quite amazing in its power, and great for creating through-breezes.

The most impressive part is how quiet those low-end settings are. I'm a stickler for background noise during movies, for instance, and have been able to watch even quiet and dramatic films without being disturbed by the noise of the fan. That's also made it perfect for sleeping, especially compared to the aircon.

It's when I paired the fan with that air conditioner, though, that I really got impressed. It might seem superfluous, but the air circulation offered by the 508S really did make a difference to how quickly a room would cool using the air conditioner, and also how it would stay cool. It barely adds to the noise, too, so it's an easy win if you want a quicker impact.

Even if I didn't have the aircon to pair it with, though, I'd be hugely pleased with the 508S. It's a pedestal fan to bring the whole format into the 21st century, and the convenience of controlling it from my phone is worth the price of entry alone. You might want to get yours ordered in preparation for the next few years of heatwaves.

Plug-in solar batteries could soon become much more common in the US, with proposals now being considered in more than half of the country's states. The technology is already widely available across parts of Europe, particularly in Germany through brands such as Anker Solix and IKEA, so seeing it expand further is a really positive sign. Unfortunately, the systems are still not legal in the UK.

This is frustrating for many as energy bills remain high and UK heatwaves become more common. Plug-in solar batteries offer a more affordable way for homeowners and renters to generate and store their own electricity without installing a full rooftop solar system.

However, the good news is that UK regulations are expected to be reviewed later this year, so there's hope they could finally arrive here before too long.

According to TechRadar, the movement began when Utah became the first US state to pass House Bill 340 in March 2025, allowing portable solar panels or rooftop systems of up to 1,200W to be plugged directly into a standard household socket. Rather than sending electricity straight to the grid, the power is used by your home first, helping reduce reliance on mains electricity and lower energy bills.

Now, other states are following Utah's lead. According to The Cool Down, more than 30 states have introduced some form of legislation, whilst six states have already passed related laws. Progress across the country can be tracked using the Bright Saver Tracker, which shows where each state currently stands.

Some proposals have faced delays over safety concerns, but the introduction of the new UL 3700 safety certification is expected to address many of those issues. Products carrying this certification include built-in protections against overloading and prevent electricity from feeding back into the grid, making the systems much safer to use.

If the UK follows a similar path, plug-in solar batteries could become one of the easiest ways for households to cut energy bills and reduce their environmental impact. In the meantime, it's worth reading up on the 3 things to know before buying a plug-in solar battery so you're ready if the rules do change.

I've checked out everything being added to Netflix and Prime Video this week, to pick out three highlights that you're going to want to know about.

The Hawk

This looks like a real throwback from Netflix and Will Ferrell, who's picking things up again to play a somewhat forgotten fictional golfer trying to get back to the top level to complete the grand slam of majors that he never quite managed in his pomp. This time, though, he's going to have to contend against his own son, who's become the buttoned-up pro he never was.

Ferrell's character is called Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, giving his name to the whole movie, and the project looks like an old-school comedy in the vein of Anchorman or Dodgeball, which means it might be fairly predictable, but also comforting. The real joy will almost certainly be in the ad-libs and seeing how far Ferrell is willing to take his performance – I'd bet way further than you think.

Heartstopper Forever

• Streaming from: 17 July

One of Netflix's most beloved series comes to an end not with another season, but with a feature film to send its characters off into the sunset. The story of Charlie and Nick's whirlwind school romance has captured millions of fans over the last few years, but with the two characters moving into a new phase of life, it's reached a natural stopping point.

That doesn't mean there's no tension to work out, though – far from it. With one going to university and the other staying at home, the big question will be how they keep their relationship going. Will they be up for the hard yards of long-distance love? Will one have to give up his dream for the other? Or will they call it quits? Expect this one to shoot up the charts as people tune in to find out when it arrives.

Ride or Die

If I had a dollar for every time a big streaming service made a movie about normal-seeming people who secretly live double lives as spies, I'd probably be able to buy a decent lunch by now – it's a topic that just can't seem to be left alone for more than a year without being brought back up. In fairness, this go-around from Prime Video does look a little more fun and inventive than some.

It stars Hannah Waddingham as that secret spy, alongside her best friend, played by Octavia Spencer, who's taken along for the ride when assassins target her bestie at the wrong moment. It's a classic fish-out-of-water gag that'll last for most of the movie, you'd guess, and Ride or Die will probably sink or swim based on the chemistry between those two leads.

With the current temperatures in the UK, I wouldn't be surprised if installing permanent air conditioning in your home has crossed your mind at least once since the heatwave began.

Installing air conditioning is a much bigger investment than buying one of the best portable air conditioners, but it can make a huge difference if you're looking for a long-term cooling solution.

The final cost depends on the size of your home, how many rooms you want to cool and the type of system you choose, so I've broken down the typical prices to give you an idea of what to expect.

How much does it cost?

The most common option for cooling a single room is a split-system air conditioner, which typically costs between £1,500 and £3,000, including professional installation. These systems feature an indoor unit mounted on the wall, connected to an outdoor condenser, and are a popular choice for bedrooms and living rooms. One of our freelancers recently had an AC unit installed in his bedroom by BOXT, so it's worth checking out his experience if you're considering it.

If you want to cool multiple rooms, a multi-split system is the next step up. These systems connect several indoor units to a single outdoor unit and generally cost between £3,000 and £7,000, depending on how many rooms you're covering and how complicated the installation is.

For cooling your entire home, prices increase significantly. A fully ducted central air conditioning system can cost anywhere from £8,000 to £15,000 or more, especially if it's being installed in an existing property. These systems are more commonly fitted in new-build homes, where ductwork can be planned into the design from the start.

What else is there to consider?

There are also some additional costs to consider. Installation can become more expensive if pipework needs to travel a long distance, electrical upgrades are required or access to the property is challenging. Many homeowners also choose an annual servicing plan, which usually costs around £100 to £250 per year, to keep the system running efficiently.

Despite the upfront cost, permanent air conditioning is something many homeowners would recommend if they have the budget. With UK heatwaves becoming more frequent and temperatures continuing to rise, installing AC could be a way to future-proof your home rather than finding a temporary fix every summer.

The World Cup has been a genuine disaster for my normal routine when it comes to actually watching movies. I normally watch at least a couple each week, and in recent times, a lot of those have been on 4K discs, since I'm very much in my physical media era (and never plan to leave it).

Now that we're in the latter stages of the tournament, though, my commitment to watching basically every game that isn't completely absurd from a timezone perspective is finally less of an issue. There are just four games left in the tourney, and that means fallow evenings where I can catch up on my queue.

My most recent watch was the Brazilian drama I'm Still Here, a pick from a film club I'm in, and I really didn't expect it to unmask a great hidden feature for me on Apple TV. That's the app I watched the film through, via a free trial of the BFI Player (what a treat), as it's the slickest to navigate in my experience.

That said, the moment the first line of dialogue happened at the start of the movie, which is entirely in Portuguese, alarm bells rang for me. Perhaps it's been a while since I watched a foreign-language movie on Apple TV, or perhaps there's been an update, but the default subtitles were bigger than I wanted and on an opaque background, and I quite simply didn't like them.

When you write about technology as much as we do at T3, though, you get a sixth sense for software features, and I had a sense that Apple might let me customise them. I expected some other versions to choose from, but when I realised that I could create entire custom presets, I'll happily admit I was (and remain) impressed.

Apple TV lets you not only choose a font, but also customise the background opacity, the size, and the actual colour of your text. Plus, you can choose how that text is outlined for even better contrast (or more subtlety if you want it). It's genuinely a brilliant system and a great reminder of how accessibility features are a net good for everyone.

It's also classic Apple – a company that is sometimes easy to make fun of, but which clearly has a rigorous commitment to design principles and groundwork that many others can't match. I've tried various other streaming platforms to compare, and while plenty let you choose your font and size, almost none of them come close to matching the depth of Apple's customisation.

It only took me about 30 seconds to build a style that worked for me, and from there, it was time to unpause and watch the movie without the whole thing being undermined by annoyingly modern subtitles. If you've ever looked at subs on Apple TV and had even the slightest eyebrow-raise at them, make sure you check out the settings when you next watch something subtitled – it could upgrade your viewing experience in surprising ways.

The UK heatwave is back, and whilst many of us are enjoying the sunshine, your lawn might not be feeling quite as happy. Rising temperatures and dry conditions can quickly turn healthy green grass into a brown mess if it's not looked after properly.

The good news is you don't need to spend hours working on your garden or invest in expensive products to help your lawn survive the heat. A few simple changes to how you water, mow and maintain your grass can make a big difference, and I've listed the three easiest things down below so you can get started.

1. Water your lawn at the right time

One of the biggest mistakes people make during a heatwave is watering their lawn at the hottest time of day. Just like with plants, much of that water can evaporate before it reaches the roots when temperatures are high.

Instead, water early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is weaker and the soil has more time to absorb the moisture. A deeper watering less often is also better than a quick daily sprinkle, as it helps the grass develop stronger roots and cope better with dry conditions.

2. Raise your mower cutting height

During a heatwave, your lawn needs to hold onto as much moisture as possible, and one easy way to help is by raising the cutting height on your mower.

Whether you're using one of the best cordless mowers or the best robot mowers, cutting your grass too short can leave it more exposed to the sun and cause it to dry out faster. Keeping your grass slightly longer helps provide shade, reduces moisture loss and keeps your lawn healthier.

3. Avoid heavy lawn maintenance during extreme heat

When temperatures rise, your lawn is already under stress, so avoid putting it through too much extra work. Try to hold off on jobs like scarifying, heavy mowing or applying treatments until the weather cools down.

If you do need to mow, do it in the evening when it's cooler and avoid cutting too much grass at once. Leaving some grass clippings behind can also help, as they return moisture and nutrients back into the soil.

I sound like a broken record at this point, but I’m here to say it again – there’s a heatwave on right now! I’m loving the hot weather but where I struggle is sleeping in the heat.

I’ve followed these 7 tips for sleeping in a heatwave religiously over the past few weeks, and it has made a world of difference. But if you don’t have the right bedroom accessories, you could be making your room hotter which will negatively impact your sleep.

From cooling pads to thermal curtains, here’s five bedroom accessories to help you survive the heatwave – and summer in general!

1. Cooling mattress pad

Mattresses are expensive so I’m not going to tell you to completely replace your mattress just because it’s hot. But one thing you can add to your mattress to make it more breathable is a cooling mattress pad.

A cooling mattress pad sits in your bed and stops you from overheating. Some will be made of gel or memory foam materials that are designed to draw away heat and moisture from your body. Others have chilled built-in tubes that actively cool you down. Cooling pads are fairly inexpensive, and you can get full ones for your mattress or smaller ones to go under your pillow.

2. Bamboo bedding

Switching to summer bed sheets can make a huge difference to the temperature of your bed. But if you want to take this a step further, I’d suggest upgrading to bamboo bedding. Bamboo has lots of sleep benefits, including temperature regulation and moisture wicking to keep you cool while you sleep. It’s also naturally hypoallergenic so it can help tackle those pesky summer allergies.

3. Thermal blackout curtains

Your bedroom windows let in a lot of heat, which is why it’s recommended to keep your windows closed and blinds drawn during a heatwave. A great bedroom upgrade for all year round is thermal blackout curtains. This type of curtains completely block out incoming light, heat and noise. For summer, this means your room can stay cool and during the winter, they block cold drafts.

4. Pedestal fan

While you shouldn’t technically sleep with a fan on at night, everyone does – including me! But the type of fan you use can make your room cooler and more comfortable. I’d recommend a pedestal fan as they’re easy to move around your room and can even sit on your bedside table if you get an adjustable model.

Pedestal fans tend to have a good amount of oscillation, so they can move cool air across your entire room so it’s not directly blowing at you, which can cause aches and pains. They’re also quieter than bigger fans, especially if you use sleep mode.

5. A hot water bottle – yes, really

This might sound ridiculous, but you can use your hot water bottle to cool your bed before you get into it. Instead of filling it with hot water, fill your hot water bottle with cold water before putting it in the freezer. Make sure you only fill it two-thirds full as the water will expand as it freezes. Once it’s frozen, wrap it in a tea towel and pop it in your bed!

Aldi has launched a huge range of outdoor garden lights as part of its latest Specialbuys. Most are solar-powered, whilst a handful are rechargeable, giving you plenty of options depending on your outdoor setup.

This isn't the first summer-friendly launch we've seen from Aldi recently. Following its budget beer dispenser and affordable range of fans, and these new garden lights are another great example of the retailer offering seasonal essentials at wallet-friendly prices.

As with all Aldi Specialbuys, availability is limited, so once they're gone, they're gone.

If you're a fan of hi-fi audio equipment, you're probably also used to seeing extortionate price tags. It's not uncommon for speakers and other gear to run into several thousands, and going down the route of separates can see you spend four- or five-figure sums on pieces of kit which don't even have a direct effect on sound.

Fortunately, it's not all expensive. While the shiny end of the spectrum is packed with pricey gear, there's also a range of more affordable kit which will make enjoying killer audio easier on the wallet.

Here are three I've tested which I cannot live without.

1. Audio Technica AT-LP70XBT

I've collected records for years now, and I love nothing more than sitting down to spin a disc and relax into the lovely, analogue warmth. When my old turntable bit the dust earlier this year, I opted to snag this Audio Technica model, and I've loved every second of using it.

The automatic, belt-driven operation might not win favour with cork sniffers, but it's more than enough for my needs and makes the process totally simple. Not only that, it looks great, and gives me the opportunity to switch out the cartridge further down the line, which means I can upgrade without switching out the whole unit.

2. Majority Audio D70X

Of course, a great turntable needs to be paired with a pair of great speakers. Those can quickly mount up in terms of cost, and while there's a lot to be said for spending here – they are the rubber meets road component, after all – I was convinced that there was a more cost-conscious option.

The Majority Audio D70X offers exactly that, costing just £70 (approx. €82 / US$95 / AU$135) for the pair. Audio quality is better than I'd anticipated too, offering more than enough fidelity to make the most of an untreated room.

3. Activo Scoop IEMs

Arguably saving the best for last, meet the IEMs which have replaced all of my other earbuds and headphones. Sure, anything wireless is more convenient, but I just love the fidelity offered by these. Sonically, they blow earbuds worth two or three times as much out of the water.

What's also handy is the design, which allows the user to switch out the connection in under a minute. That makes them perfect for using with multiple devices – I routinely swap between the 3.5mm and USB-C jacks for trading between my phone and my Gadhouse Miko cassette player, and always have the option of 4.4mm for other devices when the need calls.

It's also hard to ignore just how stylish and on-trend you look with a pair of wired headphones, too. If it's good enough for Harry Styles and Zendaya, it's good enough for me.

The 2026 Wimbledon Champions is drawing to a close at the end of this week, and wow, has it been a busy fortnight. Despite having it on the TV for the past two weeks, I’ve not been paying too much attention to the tennis as I’ve been distracted by the luxury watches both on and off the court.

From David Beckham’s Tudor to Roger Federer’s Rolex, here are the best nine watches spotted at Wimbledon 2026, worn by athletes, celebrities and spectators alike.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph on Serena Williams

For her return to Wimbledon, tennis player and style icon Serena Williams was spotted wearing an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph on the court. As an ambassador for Audemars Piguet since 2014, Williams is often spotted wearing Royal Oak timepieces and this year’s championships are no exception.

Her latest Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph is even more special, as its bright pink colour and rubber strap matches her racquet grip. Measuring 37mm, the watch features a titanium case with a bezel set with 32 brilliant-cut diamonds. The Lady Tapisserie dial is bright pink and has a triple chronograph display.

Tudor Black Bay 58 on David Beckham

David Beckham is often spotted supporting in the stands at Wimbledon, and he’s also regularly seen wearing a Tudor watch as he’s one of the brand’s global ambassadors. Just like last year, Beckham has been showing off his bespoke, personalised Tudor Black Bay Chrono.

This Tudor Black Bay Chrono features a black lacquer dial with two white subdials, snowflake hands and a date window. What it lacks is numerals which are replaced by diamonds – because why not?! The case, bracelet and bezel is also studded with diamonds.

Rolex Datejust II on Roger Federer

As Rolex is the Official Timekeeper for Wimbledon, it only seems right that there’s been a far few spotted at this year’s championships. Even better, Roger Federer, former tennis player and eight-time winner at Wimbledon was spotted in the stands wearing the Rolex Datejust II.

Federer’s Rolex Datejust II measures 41mm and features a silver dial and Oyster bracelet. The dial showcases Arabic numerals and a fluted bezel wraps around it. Not only is it an iconic Rolex timepiece, but this particular Rolex Datejust II was worn by Federer back when he won Wimbledon in 2009.

Hublot Big Bang Reloaded Usain Bolt on Usain Bolt

If you have a watch named after you, it only seems fair that you should wear it at every exciting occasion! Earlier this year, Hublot ambassador and runner, Usain Bolt announced his latest collaboration with the brand, deftly called the Hublot Big Bang Reloaded Usain Bolt.

Seen wearing it at Wimbledon, the Hublot Big Bang Reloaded Usain Bolt measures 44mm and is made from black ceramic and carbon. The bezel is in 18K yellow gold – as are the H-shaped screws – and features the engraving ‘Anything is Possible, Don’t Think Limits’. In true Bolt style, the dial also features a lightning bolt seconds hand and the watch has an original soil sample from his training track inside.

IWC Ingenieur Automatic 35 “Pool” on Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield is a fan favourite spot at Wimbledon. For watch enthusiasts, they’ll have also spotted that he was wearing an unreleased IWC Ingenieur Automatic 35 “Pool” – and we still don’t know much about it just yet!

A new take on a classic 1976 design from Gerald Genta, Garfield’s IWC Ingenieur Automatic 35 “Pool” has a blue ‘aqua’ dial and is surprisingly small at just 35mm. It features a grid-patterned dial, and an integrated case and bezel, but that’s all we (and anyone) knows so far.

OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M on Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Actor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was seen giving OMEGA some love at this year’s Wimbledon. On his wrist was the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M, and at closer inspection, it looks to be the steel and black ‘wave’ combination.

Measuring 42mm, the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M has a black ‘wave’ dial, a steel case, and a black rubber strap. As a Seamaster, it’s water resistant to 300 metres, and has a helium escape valve and dive bezel. As OMEGA is the primary watch worn by James Bond, could this be a hint that Taylor-Johnson could be the favoured choice for the role? We’ll have to wait and see.

Breitling Top Time B31 on James Norton

Another British actor spotted in the stands was James Norton, and he was seen wearing a Breitling Top Time B31. This sport-chic watch measures just 38mm, proving that the small watch trend is here to stay.

The Breitling Top Time B31 worn by James Norton features a bold green dial with a minute track, hour markers and a date window. The integrated multi-link bracelet and case comes in stainless steel, and the watch itself is powered by the B31 movement.

Cartier Santos on Richard E. Grant

If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s that Richard E. Grant will always be seen wearing two watches – and this Wimbledon was no exception. The actor is often spotted wearing a Cartier Santos on one wrist and a Breitling Navitimer on the other, and the same can be said for Wimbledon 2026.

The Breitling Navitimer was given to Grant by his Eswatini-born father on his deathbed. The Cartier Santos was given to him by his wife when he thought he’d lost the Breitling, but now, he wears both as a tribute to his father’s memory. One watch is also set to Eswatini time.

Last but not least. Actor Ncuti Gatwa was seen looking smart while wearing the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional Solargraph 100. Measuring just 28mm, this TAG Heuer is the smallest watch we’ve seen at Wimbledon, but it’s still big in character.

With a steel case and bezel, Gatwa’s TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional Solargraph 100 has a dark blue dial. While it’s tricky to see in pictures, the hour markers are replaced by diamonds for that extra bit of sparkle.

With another heatwave settling over the UK and the school holidays just around the corner, plenty of people will be swapping the sofa for the footpaths. Warm-weather walking has its own set of challenges, which is why staying cool, carrying enough water and protecting yourself from the sun is just as important as choosing the right route.

The cushioned platform should make long walks easier on tired feet while allowing plenty of airflow on hot days. Of course, hiking sandals aren't your best bet if you're moving through thick vegetation, but anywhere in hot weather, they are my go-to choice.

If maximum cushioning isn't your priority, I'd recommend the Xero Shoes Z-Trek (£65 | Zero Shoes). Its minimalist construction delivers a much more barefoot-like experience, encouraging natural foot movement and giving a closer connection to the trail.
