Sony Ericsson M600i

Zippier than Road Runner, Sony Ericsson's touchscreen emailer's a dab hand on the web too...

Touchscreen controls set this ultra-slim smart phone apart from the others. With a scroll wheel and QWERTY keyboard, there are tons of ways to control it too. Well, several, anyway.

Email set-up isn't too problematic - you fill in your details online, input a code and wait for your mesasages - but not as simple as on the BlackBerry (opposite page), and we initially suffered repeated crashes. Once these were sorted, emails tended to arrive about 10 minutes after hitting our Tiscali inbox.

After downloading software, you'll be Web-bound in no time. Using GPRS, BBC online's home page loads in under a second, pictures and all. The screen is excellent and the browser a pleasure to use. It can display pages in both portrait and landscape, and the stylus really helps with scrolling, as well as giving great control over zoom, making it zippier than Road Runner pursued by Wile E Coyote equipped with Acme's finest.

Each side of each QWERTY key enters a different letter. Inputting two letters consecutively from the same button can be awkward, but they're big enough to generally make typing speedy.

A businesslike-looking phone with a very good Web browser. Shame about the buggy email access, though.
