Nokia 9500 Communicator

Two screens, two keypads, two hinges. Say hello to the Communicator that's a mobile phone one second, and a mini computer the next.

The obscenely wide display is perfect for Web- browsing - be that via built-in GPRS or at broadband speeds over Wi-Fi. The large qwerty keyboard is excellent for two-finger typing of lengthy emails and documents, and the extra shortcut keys make light work of switching between apps. The device runs all previous Communicator software, but the bundled package covers most needs, with a decent Microsoft-compatible office suite, a full-screen Web browser, an email client, a photo viewer and a media player. The docking cradle is a bonus.

It's expensive and slightly sluggish at times. The plain-Jane design has all the aesthetic appeal of a brick, evoking misty-eyed memories of barking 1980s city boys. Third-party software is thin on the ground and the screen doesn't quite fold fl at, making it slightly awkward for handheld use. It's hardly pocket-friendly and it'll only impress other Communicator users when you pull it out - but the great screen-and-keyboard combo means that to try it is to love it.
