LG C3300
Swing both ways? This phone works for boys and girls.
Does the phrase "designed by a woman, for women" put you off? If so, then you may well miss out on a rather nice little phone, because LG's C3300 is just such a phenomenon, but it's also a rather neat little handset, and well worthy of your attention.

Okay, so the C3300 does look a bit girly, with lots of rounded edges and a silver and claret finish, but it's also very compact and will fit just as easily inside a suit jacket as it will a handbag. It's pretty basic in other areas, however, with only a VGA camera on board, no Bluetooth, and no way of expanding the 8MB of internal memory. You can download Java games, though, which looked pretty good on the 65,000-colour screen.

Performance out and about was more impressive, with clear call quality and good reception - although it's only available on T-Mobile - and the battery lasted a whole week without us having to recharge it. It was also a joy to use, and compared to other "female-friendly" phones such as the Nokia 7280, it provided us with easy access to contacts and text messaging.
This compact clamshell may be a touch light on the features, but in use it's a real sweetie, and if you're on the look-out for a basic handset that's easy to use, offers good call quality and will run for a week at a time without having to be re-juiced, then it's well worth a look. Failing that, it's cheap enough that you can buy it for your girlfriend and borrow it from her when you need something smaller...
