Philips VOIP321 DECT phone

Skype, meet DECT.

Skype is going stratospheric, thanks to phones like this delicate blend of DECT and free call-loving Skype.

Plug the base into your phone socket, and it functions as a normal wireless phone. However, connect the base via USB to your PC, and you can also make free Skype calls to your contacts, as well as using SkypeOut to make cheap calls to landlines via your broadband link.

As long as you've got a PC, it's easy to set up, and the phone itself is attractive, and fits comfortably into the hand. Call quality is excellent, too, stacking up well against more expensive DECT fare.

Irritatingly, your PC has to be switched on to make Skype calls, unlike the Edge-core phone (4/5, T3 131), which connects via Wi-Fi to Skype directly through your router. Also, if you want to make SkypeOut calls, you'll need to set them up as contacts on your PC first, rather than just dial the numbers.

However, this DECT/Skype hybrid has enough quality to be a serious contender if you're after a new home phone and are feeling the burn of one too many BT red letter days.
