Death Match: Nintendo DSi VS Sony PSP 3000
Welcome to the Japanese gaming war!
The latest Nintendo DSi offers this and dual touch-screens with dual cameras built-in. So it is little wonder it’s outselling the PSP in Japan. But will the rest of world see the handhelds in the same light when it hits these shores next year, or will the anti-glare, enlarged screen of the PSP-3000 win over the fans?
The age old battle of Nintendo versus ‘S’ titled rivals wages, on but at a slower pace. These new upgrades don’t feel like a competitive jump forward, but more of a hand-in-hand hop. So is there a winner or is the battle set to rage on until handhelds finally meld with mobiles into one über device?
Graphics
PSP 3000
Wipeout dazzles the gamer with a veritable firework display of sharp colours and post-PS1 graphics. Visually it’s the best handheld device made so far.
Nintendo DSi
Staying true to the Nintendo style it remains cartoony and playful. Great for Mario, but not so good for pushing forward with modern gaming.
Winner: PSP 3000
Controls
PSP-3000
Beautifully built joystick and invaluable shoulder buttons, yet Sony’s neglected to add a second analogue stick in the big space on the right, which would unlock endless FPS gaming potential.
Nintendo DSi
Compact but not too fiddly even for the larger, more robust gentleman, there’s been no drastic button change since the Lite. Well, apart from dual touch-screens for maximum stylus action.
Winner: Nintendo DSi
Screen
PSP-3000
Gaming vampires beware. The biggest change in the new PSP is the larger, anti-glare screen which allows for gaming in daylight (finally!) and produces more colours, so the image is sharper and more detailed in all lights.
Nintendo DSi
Standing at 3.25 inches as opposed to the old 3 inch efforts, the screens are 17% larger and are both are touch interactive.

Connectivity
PSP-3000
Still armed with Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b), USB 2.0, 3.5mm audio out and analogue video out, the PSP now also has a microphone to add two-way depth to your connection.
Nintendo DSi
There’s Wi-Fi for multiplay and buying DSiWare content from the new online store, which is Japan only at the moment. Games are stored on the SD card slot, as well as music tracks (now including AAC) and camera pics.

Game choice
PSP-3000
Portable GTA, the Wipeout revival, Need For Speed and Pro Evo - the PSP is still the handheld answer to downsizing the big titles. But it’s all a bit serious and for sheer gaming ingenuity and fun – where’s the Mario or Zelda - lags behind Nintendo.
Nintendo DSi
Nintendo’s inexplicable removal of the GBA slot slashes the titles on offer. It’s still the home to classics like the Star Wars and Indiana Series, Brain Training, and Mario & Sonic Olympics. Watch for a new Mario and Mega Man due for DSi overhauls.

Now that the 3000 comes with a mic you can make use of Skype, alternatively record your own voice for an egotistical alternative to music or go for internet radio. Subscribe to Go! View and watch TV on the move, add ons include Go! Cam camera and Go! Explore GPS
DSi
Featuring not one but two cameras, granted at only 0.3megapixels and VGA quality, the DSi is an improvement, but falls short of the multimedia potential of its Sony rival. Also the dual touch screens and SD slot make this an extras extravaganza for Nintendo.

Conclusion
PSP-3000
The crystal clear screen displays a universe of media from memory stick, WiFi, and UMD connectivity. There are heaps of add-ons, making it by far the better console. Gameplay, just can’t match the DSi though.
Nintendo DSi
With superior games and the innovative touchscreen, it’s clear why the DSi continues to rule. Attracts a wider range of users than the PSP, who don’t mind the lack of graphics and multimedia features.
