ZTE Light Android tablet unveiled

New Android slate gets airing in China

Android 2.1 and 7-inch proddable panel for latest iPad-battler.

ZTE has just unleashed the latest Android tablet to go head-to-head with Apple’s T3 award-winning iPad. Dubbed the ZTE Light, it’s being shown off at a tech gathering in Beijing.

The new slate rocks a 7-inch screen, much like Android stablemate the Galaxy Tab. However, it’s only got old-school Android 2.1 on-board, something Google will doubtless be concerned by, seeing as it’s hardly convinced Android 2.2 is up to the job of working on tablets.

The Light also comes with 3G, Wi-Fi, mobile calling skills to make you look like Dom Joly every time you clamp it to your ear, plus a 3 megapixel camera round the back. The processor is pegged back at 512MB however, which suggests things might get a tad sluggish if you start opening up too many apps at once.

ZTE claims you’ll be able to squeeze an iPad-matching 10 hours from the Light, with SD support for stashing 32GB worth of movies, music and games.

There’s no word yet on whether this effort will land on these shores, or for how much. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.
