XXX domain banned by Indian government over porn laws

Recently confirmed XXX domain to be blocked

Indian announces plans to block the upcoming XXX domain

India has become the first country to announce it will block the .XXX domain suffix that was recently approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Having been given the green light amidst widespread complaints from adult industry activists, the .XXX domain, which will be used by websites offering pornographic and adult material, is to be banned by the Indian government on the basis that it goes against the country’s laws.

A statement from a Senior Official in the country’s Ministry of IT announced: "India along with many other countries from the Middle East and Indonesia opposed the grant of the domain in the first place, and we would proceed to block the whole domain, as it goes against the IT Act and Indian laws."

Those who petitioned against the introduction of the .XXX domain on behalf of the porn industry did so on the fear that such bans would be introduced and that sites affiliated with the .XXX suffix would then see their corresponding .com sites barred by nations looking to curtail access to smutty sites.
