Xbox 720 release date to overlap Xbox 360 lifecycle

Next-gen Xbox console to land sooner than expected

Xbox 720 release date to precede Xbox 360 culling

With Nintendo set to launch its next-generation console in 2012, Microsoft’s European head of Xbox has suggested the Xbox 720 release date could come sooner than expected.

Despite repeatedly speaking of a ten-year lifecycle plan for the current Xbox 360 console Microsoft’s European head of Xbox, Chris Lewis, has said that the company’s next-generation console could overlap with its predecessor.

"We think we're a little over halfway with the life cycle of the console, but that's not to say there won't be an overlap," said Lewis on the Xbox 360 which launched in 2005 and its eventual replacement.

"I'm not going to announce specifically or talk about timing but you could imagine there could be overlap, it depends. We're not being specific about the next generation at this stage. We're very fixated on what we're doing right now and the success we're enjoying."
