Microsoft’s flagship gaming device the Xbox 360 was the highest selling console of 2011 outselling bitter rival the Sony PS3 by almost 3 million units, new reports have revealed.
The figures, compiled form NPD sales data and being banded around by Microsoft, have revealed the Xbox 360 was the top selling console of the past 12 months with 1.7 million units being shifted during December alone to spell a strong Christmas period for the company.
Eclipsing the sales of Sony’s leading games console the PlayStation 3 the NPD report found that the Xbox had shifted more than 2.7 million units more than its closest competitor to become a runaway victor.
"The Xbox 360 was the best-selling platform for the year,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. “The two HD platforms (360 and PS3) were the two platforms to realise a unit sales increase over last year. All other platforms declined in unit sales versus 2010.”
With numerous rumours suggesting the imminent arrival of both the Xbox 720 and PS4, Microsoft and Sony saw increased console sales during 2011. The console market’s other big player, Nintendo, fared much worse, however, with Wii sales dropping a massive 55 per cent on the year before.
