Xbox 360 HD-DVD for £100?

The console's movie-spinning add-on could be the cheapest way to get into next generation Hi-Def films.

The Xbox 360's HD-DVD player add-on will be available by Christmas for $200 (£106), according to Taiwanese news site DigiTimes.com.

If true, this means that the small unit is likely to be the cheapest way for consumers to get on the HD-DVD bandwagon - even if you factor in the Xbox 360's cost of £210. Standalone HD-DVD players, such as the Toshiba HD-A1, are likely to cost at least £500 at launch.

Microsoft has already revealed that the device, which hooks up to the console via high speed USB, will be only for movies, and that it has no plans to release games on HD-DVD discs.

One note of caution: a $200 price tag in the US does not necessarily translate to a £100 price tag over here - although any substantial difference in cost is likely to have Britain's vocal gaming community moaning about Microsoft's money-grubbing. We'll bring you more news about the unit as we get it.
