Wireless iPod looms

New wire-free designs have iPod's faithful clan of gossip hounds in a tizzy.

Yes, it's that time of the week again. Apple's rumour-hungry fanbase has cooked up another crock of product speculation for us to pin our hopes on. This time, it's wireless iPods!

Apparently, the next generation iPod will synchronise music without the need for a cable, at least that's the suggestion of a patent filing from the Cupertino firm.

The deliberately vague document shows a flow chart with a decision making process for syncing via cable or wireless, stating that line of sight is not required for a wire-free connection, and that the "media player" could remain in a bag or case.

It's no guarantee the next Apple player will cut the cord though, we've seen numerous plans from Steve Jobs and co which have yet to make it to production.

That said, we've expected a wireless iPod for ages, especially with the Zune waiting just round the corner, menacingly toting its built in Wi-Fi.

Popular consensus amongst Mac fans is that a slew of Apple products will be delivered next month, with the iPhone, new Mac Book Pros and the much anticipated video iPod all high on the wishlist.

If the patents prove predictive, the video iPod could come toting wireless too!...
