Looking to trim your monthly mobile bill? Well, if yours needs a crash diet, you might want to get yourself acquainted with Virgin Mobile, which has hot a new low for monthly call packages - just £8.50 for 100 minutes, 100 texts and in some cases, free instant messaging.

Surely there's a catch? Well, if you're a heavy user, that's one for a start. But there's also the not-so-small issue of the handset. Let's be honest, if you move in fashion-conscious circles, the phone you use is effectively an extension of your personality. And handsets like the Samsung G600, LG KC550 and Nokia 3120 might have you running a mile. Not that they're bad handsets, the first two pack 5 megapixel cameras, while the third offers 3G connectivity. And with Virgin throwing in Instant Messenger access for free with the Nokia and Samsung, as well as moblle net access for 30p a day, all are serious propositions. But they're just not cutting edge. And that's a serious minus.

Still, we're all cutting our cloth accordingly these days and if the bills are mounting up, it could well be £30+ in your pocket each month. Or if you like, an extra night out with your fashionable mates. Suddenly it doesn't seem such a bad idea.
