Unlocked iPhones on offer at Play.com
Freedom at a price
If the latest cut-price offers from O2 still don't cut it, you could get yourself an unlocked iPhone from online retailer Play.com. But only for a substantial outlay upfront.
Play is advertising both 8GB and 16GB handsets for dispatch in the next 24 hours, priced at £549.99 for the 8GB and £599.99 for the 16GB model (already discounted by £50 would you believe). Both are offered 'Sim Free / Unlocked' and with all the features you would expect from a contract-laden iPhone.
For that price you get the freedom to hop around all the networks, but in terms of the bottom line, is it really a good deal? Well, if you signed on the line with O2 for two years, a contract 8GB iPhone would cost you £822.24 over the 24 months, obviously including calls and free data. That's £272.25 more than buying Play's unlocked handset, but doesn't take into account the cost of calls and data you'll be paying someone else over the two-year period. Throw that into the mix and you're probably talking around the same outlay.
