Mobile phone industry bosses finally look set to start developing a universal charger and bring an end to the misery of getting more juice into our handsets when we're on the move.

There are currently more than thirty different charger designs across Europe but this new deal means the irritiating days of hunting for a charger to fit your Sony Ericsson or the right plug for your Nokia could be comnig to an end.

Companies who've signed up so far inlcude Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Apple, Motorola, Samsung and RIM. But we're not counting our chickens just yet, so far the committement to develop the new style of charger that will work off a micro-USB connection is only voluntary.

But with at least initial backing the agreement should have as much of a positive environmental impact as it does on our convenience,  reducing the huge wastage that comes with people disposing of old chargers they no longer require.
