Toshiba launches ZV Series of upscaling TVs

Near-HD for the price of a new TV

Undaunted by the failure of HD-DVD, Toshiba follows up its upscaling DVD player with more HD-friendly kit - the ZV Series upscaling TV.

First spotted at IFA, the ZV Series TV scans standard definition images, using the company's Resolution + technology to upscale TV shows or DVDs to near-HD quality. Obviously it's good for any Blu-ray you push its way too, with an increased refresh rate offering a smoothness to match the vivid images provided by the 30,000:1 contrast ratio. If you've still got a pile of old DVDs and a growing collection of Blu-ray, it sounds pretty much perfect.

Also present are 3x HDMI slots (along with more old school Component Video, SCART, S Video and PC input connectors), Toshiba's full power-down button (avoid standby power drain) and Game Mode technology, a direct channel for two-way communication between the TV and games consoles, cutting down on time lag. A 42-inch will set you back £899.99, while the 46-inch model is yours for £1,199.99.
