Amazon UK tops list ahead of American sibling

So, what sites have been taking our cash

A list of the UK’s most popular internet retailers has been released by stats generator Hitwise with Amazon.co.uk retaining its crown as the most used shopping site.

Having claimed the top spot every year since IMRG Experian Hitwise began compiling the list, Amazon.co.uk found itself joined in the top 10 this year by its Stateside sibling Amazon.com in sixth.

Argos and Play landed second and third respectively in the list of top UK e-tailers ahead of the top finishing single-brand store, Apple in fourth. Supermarket giants Tesco rounded out the top five.

IMRG CEO, James Roper, believes that the continued growth of online retail would not be possible without the high street presence: "With multichannel retailers now accounting for two-thirds of the top 50 merchants, it is clear that those with both physical stores and an online presence are leading the growth in e-retail.”

With the three top consumer electronics e-tailers finishing fourth (Apple), 24th (HP) and 26th (Currys), it is evident that the tech industry is not the dominant force in online retail. Roper added: "Not surprisingly, fashion retailers continue to move up the Hot Shops List as clothing remains one of the fastest growing online sectors."
