Three month social media trial of Tayside Police commences
Tayside Community Officers will be tweeting while on the beat for the next three months.
Community officers in Auchterarder, Crieff, and Kinross will provide the local communities with information and updates on road and traffic, campaigns, crime prevention and more police issues that affect their community.
Gordon Scobbie, the Deputy Chief Constable of Tayside Police and National Lead for Digital and Social Media Engagement said that they have already used social media before with positive results.
He said, "Many Forces are now realising that traditional methods of getting messages out, which we have relied on in the past, are having less impact and are reaching fewer people. Simply ‘broadcasting’ messages by whichever channel, is no longer enough. What really makes a difference is giving people the opportunity to engage in a two way conversation with the police about things that matter to them."
In addition, Tayside Police will be the first in the UK to trial MyPolice, an online feedback tool that allows the public to have an online conversation with the police, anonymously if they so wish.
The Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill said the Scottish Government awaits the results of the pilot with interest.
The Greater Manchester police have previously used Twitter for 24 hours to highlight the work their officers do on a daily basis.
