T3 Exclusive: Philips RelaxTV

Next gen telly that adjusts to your mood

Philips is working on a TV that adjusts to your mood, it was revealed yesterday.

Details are scarce as it's currently in development, but it's believed the RelaxTV will measure your heart rate and body temperature using sensors, then adjust lighting, sound and rumble feedback on a chair to match it.

So if you're practically horizontal watching Planet Earth it'll go calm, whereas should you get to the bit in Predator where Arnie and the boys empty all their ammo into a jungle, it'll kick off.

"We're going for more immersion," Fred Boekhorst, Senior Vice President of Philips Research, told us at its research headquarters in Eindhoven. "We've covered sight and sound, now the challenge is more sensory experiences."

It's an extension of Philips' amBX interactive gaming set-up, which used flashing lights, rumbling and fans to make games more interactive - fall off a ledge, say, and a fan blows in your face to simulate falling.

Also on show at Philips Research were large OLEDs (pictured), and 3D picture frames that allow you to charge your snaps from 2D to 3D using a website. Expect to see them as an hors d'oeuvre before 3D TVs launch.
