T-Mobile G1 Android handset gets official launch

The wait is over as T-Mobile finally gives us a first look at the world's first Android handset - the T-Mobile G1.

Here at last, the much anticipated T-Mobile G1 was given its official launch today and we feel obliged to let you in on those all important need to know specs.

So what can we expect from the G1? Well it is a fairly bland-looking piece of kit, but one that features a 480x320 65K color screen, 3.1MP camera (without video capture), GPS, a full QWERTY keyboard which slides out from below the screen, up to 8G of storage and up to five hours of talk time. It will give you access to the all important Android market so you can download unique applications to customise the phone to fit your lifestyle. But if you love your Google apps, you're also in business, with one-touch access to Search, Maps, YouTube, Calendar and Google Talk.

And now the not-so-good. First up, a Gmail account and data plan is required, as well as a house that's within five miles of a T-Mobile 3G zone. Then again, with so many of the features being 3G-reliant, that's probably sensible. There's no Bluetooth streaming but it does support Wi-Fi. Which all adds up to a phone that's more interesting than groundbreaking - The G1 is set to be available for free on T-Mobile price plans of £40 a month which will also include unlimited mobile internet browsing.
