Sony to reveal PS4 virtual reality headset at GDC 2014

Oculus Rift competitor to be shown next month

Sony has revealed it plans to launch a VR competitor to the Oculus Rift for its PlayStation 4 console at the Gamer's Development Conference in San Francisco

Sony appears to have confirmed plans that it will be bringing out a virtual reality headset to accompany the PlayStation 4 later this year.

An inside source spoke to's sister site TechRadar confirming the Japanese gaming giant will be revealing a headset next month at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

"The quality and resolution are really, really good," the source told TechRadar. "People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built."

Previous rumours had tipped Sony's headset for a possible Tokyo Game Show reveal, but it now looks like we'll be seeing it a lot sooner.

"Sony has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it," said the source.

Virtual reality has become a big talking point since the Oculus Rift headset appeared in 2012. The creators of Oculus Rift famously said that the PS4 and Xbox One were too limited for the headset.

Sony has dipped a toe into the pool of personal headsets before with the HMZ-T3W, but hasn't yet ventured as far as gaming. That looks set to change although the company itself declined to comment on this story.

Last July, came up with a concept for an Oculus Rift/PlayStation blended headset. Check it out here and see what you think.
