Sony is dipping its toe into the original programming waters by making a show exclusively for its PlayStation 4 console, a new report claims.
Amazon and Netflix already make original shows for their TV and film streaming services. This would be the first time Sony has made any TV shows exclusively for its PS4.
So what can we expect? A one-hour supernatural drama series called Powers will be first, and will be produced by Sony's in-house studio, Sony Pictures Television, company execs told The Wall Street Journal.
The show centres on a detective who investigates crimes involving people who have special powers. It will be available exclusively through PlayStation Network.
Sony is also in talks to offer a separate pay-TV service through PlayStation Network. This would offer traditional TV channels.
Microsoft positioned the Xbox One as an all-in-one entertainment hub for your lounge, and now it looks like Sony is trying to broaden the PS4's appeal beyond just games. Microsoft is currently developing an original TV series for the Xbox One with the help of Steven Spielberg.
Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Entertainment, said Sony chose Powers instead of several other potential projects partly because it would resonate with gamers. "It overlays extremely well with the demographics of the PlayStation," he said.
