Sony planning Blu-ray game/movie hybrids for PS3
Stranglehold model may be the future of movie-licensed gaming
Sony has promised to release a number of Blu-ray game/movie hybrids this year, in order to drum up more sales for the PS3.
“We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc,” said John Koller, director of hardware marketing for the PS3. “There are a lot of developers who say, we have this game based on a movie, wouldn’t it be great to marry these concepts? We will definitely see this stuff this year.”
At a push, a standard PS3 game, which isn’t called Metal Gear Solid, packs around 40GB worth of data on the disc. The remaining 10GB is still more than you get on an ordinary DVD, so that space could easily be filled out with a full-length movie.
Actually, the idea has been tired before. The Collector’s Edition of John Woo presents: Stranglehold, the video game sequel to Hard Boiled, packed a remastered version of the original movie on the same disc.
Fast-forward to 2009 and we could start to see some of the many movie-licensed titles come with the movie itself on board. Sony also expects it to include a means for transferring the movie to your PSP for viewing on the move.
