Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 get 3D update

New mode lets you snap shots in three dimensions

Sweep panorama mode gets 3D upgrade - just be sure you've got 3D telly so you can play back your handiwork.

Sony’s stellar NEX-5 and NEX-3 snappers are getting a 3D upgrade, with new firmware letting you take snaps in three dimensions on the all-new cameras.

The 3D Sweep Panorama mode builds on the basic Sweep Panorama feature, stitching together a number of shots to create a wide angle view. All you need to do is move the camera from one side to the other and the NEX-5 or NEX-3 will do the rest.

Of course, looking back at these pics requires a 3D source, so you’ll either need one of Sony’s 3D Bravias or a compatible 3D telly. Which all means that while the firmware is free, you’re still going to need to dig up a minimum of two grand to take pride in your 3D images.

You can get the firmware now direct from Sony. Like the sound of it? Or do you think it’s all just a gimmick? Mouth off now at our official Facebook and Twitter feeds.
