Sony Ericsson Xperia Play release delayed by Vodafone

More Xperia Play-based embarrassment for Sony Ericsson

Move follows O2's plans to push back release of PlayStation phone.

Sony Ericsson’s much-anticipated Xperia Play, aka the PlayStation Phone, is officially due to hit shelves tomorrow. But less than 24 hours before release, Vodafone has become the latest network to delay its release.

A message sent to a customer by the network said, “Sony Ericsson have advised us that they will not be able to supply the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to meet the original launch date of 1 April."

In a further statement, Vodafone added, “We are working closely with Sony Ericsson to ensure your phone is delivered as soon as possible and we will be in touch again with specific timescales when we know more. We appreciate this is disappointing and are doing our very best to resolve this as quickly as possible."

Vodafone’s move will be extremely embarrassing for Sony Ericsson, especially after O2 said it was also delaying the Xperia Play’s release due to “bugs and issues”. Sony Ericsson is yet to comment. The mobile maker is holding a huge launch party for the phone tonight in central London.
