Sony eBook Reader launches in the UK
An iPod for books? Or more clutter for your work bag?
Vive la revolution! The book is dead, now a relic of the past with the launch of the eBook Reader. Well, according to Sony anyway.
But is it really a new dawn for the literary world or just another second best from Sony? You can get our view on the Reader right here. But to save you time, let's just say we were rather impressed. Using e-ink technology, you can read a book electronically as easily as an old school novel, even when the power is off. And with a battery life of 6,800 page turns, War and Peace is within your reach for that long daily commute.
That's if Waterstones gets its act together. You can bag your £199 Reader with 100 'classic' novels included (think old and out of copyright), but the online store of Sony's preferred download partner still isn't yet active. It promises later today. We remain sceptical about that and the price of downloads - the same price as a printed work apparently. We'll find out whether that's a wise strategy once the dust has settled on Christmas.
