Sky TV finally arrives on Xbox 360

£15 per month for 24 premium channels

No longer just a games console, the Xbox 360 is constantly trying to morph itself into a home entertainment system. Having access to 24 Sky TV channels will certainly do its case a serious amount of good.

From today, Sky is now being offered on Xbox Live without the need for added wiring or the dustbin lid on the side of the house. But it does require one thing, a monthly debit from your bank account. If you happen to be Xbox Live Gold member with at least 2Mb broadband and either a Sky TV or Sky Player subscription, you do actually get it 'free' (free, if you don't count the money you're paying for the other services obviously).

But if you've not yet been charmed by the merits of Sky, you'll be looking at £15 per month for the Entertainment Pack (including the likes of Sky One, MTV and Sky Arts), with the sports channels hitting you for another £19 each month. Yes, you did read that right.

Cost isn't the only downside. There's no HD option, with broadband speeds in Britain not up to it as yet and there's no option to watch terrestrial channels. At least, not yet anyway.

But talking a step back, this is a significant move for both Microsoft and Sky, offering Sky access to an all-new customer base (and of course, throwing in an added revenue stream), while the Xbox gets another niche selling point in the UK battle of the consoles.

It might only be just the first move in the market too. According to Sky's Griff Parry: 'More channels are being added all the time and we're confident terrestrial broadcasters will join.' If it's successful, there's always the possibility of the service being offered elsewhere - if Sky can make money via the Xbox, it's almost certain to target the PS3 in the not-too-distant future.
