Sky Sports News to leave Freeview and go HD

Channel to go subscription-only ahead of HD makeover

Freeviewers lose Georgie Thompson and Jeff Stelling for repeats of Richard Hammond.

Freeview TV viewers will no long have access to Sky Sports News from later this year as BSkyB revealed it will only make the channel available to paying customers.

The news comes amid plans for the hugely popular channel to undergo a HD makeover, a la Sky News, and follows eight years of free access nationwide.

The channel has been a godsend for those without a Sky Sports subscription by showing Premier League football goals, highlights from the rest of Sky's meaty sports content and full coverage of the brilliant Gillette Soccer Saturday show.

The news gets worse for Freeviewers after Ofcom announced that its to be replaced by Sky 3 +1. Wow, cheers guys. We can't wait to see Richard Hammond's Brainiac show again.

Aside from the HD lick of paint, another reason for the decision may be Ofcom's ruling that Sky must reduce the price of its sports packages for subscribers to other platforms, such as Virgin Media.

This is a huge shame for sports fans across the land, and we're sincerely going to miss the happiness that Georgie Thompson and go add to our mornings.
