Samsung OmniaHD is world's first phone to record 720p HD video
Samsung drops WinMo in favour of the latest Symbian platform
Samsung has revealed its Omnia successor, christened OmniaHD, at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.
The OmniaHD has earned its additional acronym twice over: this is the first ever phone that’s capable of recording video in 720p HD. Thanks to Samsung, falling satellite debris should prove a lot harder to deny from now on.
But filming in 720p is no good if your handiwork can’t be viewed on a screen that does it justice. Fortunately, Samsung has got that covered: the OmniaHD’s 3.7” touchscreen AMOLED display is by far the most impressive looking screen we’ve seen at the show so far, and sets a standard that few other companies are going to be able to best.
Furthermore, Samsung has caused a stir by packing the OmniaHD with the latest all-sing, all-dancing Symbian S60 5th edition platform. Symbian/Nokia developed it specifically with high resolution and touchscreen displays in mind and we’re happy to report that apart from looking very tasty indeed, the touchscreen interface has been considerably improved since the fiddly Samsung Omnia.
Samsung OmniaHD also boasts an 8.0-megapixel still camera, plus Wi-Fi, GPS, HSDPA and a choice of 16GB or 32GB on board memory. Prices, availability and the final specs are still to be confirmed, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out. In the meantime, hit up the gallery to see the OmniaHD in full hands-on glory.
