Samsung i8910 HD hits the UK

The handset formerly known as Omnia HD makes its debut

Samsung’s i8910 HD has just gone on sale in the UK and you can pick it up from Orange right now. The i8910 HD was once known as the Omnia HD, until someone decided numerical naming was so much easier for everyone to remember.

That small grumble aside, this is definitely a handset worth remembering. It’s the first ever handset to offer high definition video recording. You can nab 720p footage at 24 fps, which looks especially gorgeous when you play it back on the high resolution, 3.7” AMOLED screen.

The still camera is not to be sniffed at either: it’s an 8 megapixel affair, with LED flash, not to mention a selection of features you’d normally expect to find on a proper digital camera. There’s Face Detection, Smile Shot, Blink Shot and Panorama Shot modes.

The Samsung i8910 HD is also a media powerhouse, with support for  DivX, XviD, H.263, H.264, WMV and MPEG4 videos, MP3, AAC / AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA videos audio, and it comes with 8GB of memory on board. The phone is powered by the latest Symbian S60 operating system.

Additional features include built in GPS, an accelerometer for flipping the screen when you turn it, a compass, a light sensor  and, most intriguingly, a proximity sensor. No idea what that does, but we’re hoping it’s a way of keeping people from sneaking up on you when you’re working late at the office.

You can pick up a Samsung i8910 HD from Orange for free on a £40 per month contract. Be warned that’s a 24 month contract though.
