RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 launches

A Bold Curve from RIM

This morning RIM launched the BlackBerry Bold 9700, the follow-up smartphone to the original BlackBerry Bold 9000, launched over a year ago.

Drawing inspiration from the Curve range, it's smaller at only 14mm thin and lighter weighing in at 122g and is an all-round sleeker device. The shrinking continues with the screen now measuring in at 2.44-inches. Gone is the trackball to be replaced by a trackpad as seen on the latest BlackBerry Curve 8520.

Some touches of the Bold remain such as the faux leather back and fretted keyboard along with a spectacularly crisp and bright screen, but gone is the metal outer-casing to be replaced by plastic outer buttons.

It still comes packing tech with a 64Mhz processor, 256MB Flash Memory, AGPS, Wi-Fi and a somewhat paltry 3.2-megapixel camera. RIM also claims that the battery life will now last for over two days.

Running on the new 5.0 OS as seen on the new Storm 2, the layout is very similar to the original, but browsing thanks to updated OS is much snappier.

During the launch press conference in Bochum, Germany, Mike Lazaridis, RIM co CEO commented, "Emails will arrive in the handest as soon as they arrive on the desktop, and the same applies for apps such as Facebook. Emails and applictaions simply run better on BlackBerry."

No word on networks yet, but sounds like it'll be accross the board and it'll be available at the beginning of November.
