Random House brings its biggest novels to the iPhone

The biggest reads available for iPhone and iPod touch

With the Kindle not yet on these shores and the Kindle app for iPhone still US-only, there's certainly a gap in the market for a decent ebook app for the iPhone. It's a gap Random House hopes to fill with new apps for both the iPhone and iPod touch.

Rather than offering a specific app and separate content, each of Random House's bestsellers is sold as a unique app, so if you want the likes of 8th Confession by James Patterson, Nothing to Lose by Lee Child or Adventures on the High Teas by Stuart Maconie to accompany you on the daily commute, just download that particular app for what Random House calls a 'natural book-like experience' on your handset. Plenty of non book-like features too, including screen rotation, font adjustment, digital note-making and automatic bookmarking.

If that's not enough, the publishing giant is also throwing in some DVD-like extras for its digital novels, including author interviews, videos and quizzes. Indeed, if you opt for the Lee Child app, you can even download and watch an exclusive animated graphic novel too. Nice.

The first set of titles is available now, selling from what seems like a rather pricey £7.49 from Apple’s App Store. Indeed, we've just checked and the Stuart Maconie app is upwards of £10. Ouch! More titles from the Jacqueline Wilson, Ben Elton, Alastair Campbell, Chris Ryan and Richard Branson will be released in the next few months, hopefully a little cheaper than this first batch.
