PSP 2 will be out by Christmas
Sony's new design aims to see off the iPhone and iPod Touch
There have been a lot of PSP 2 rumours already – probably more than you can count – but after years of fervent speculation, those rumours are slowly congealing into something that sounds decidedly plausible.
Now a new leak is claiming that they know for certain that the PSP 2 will be out in time for Christmas and that it’ll be rocking a brand new hardware design. The insider this time is allegedly a developer already working on the new hardware, who presumably wishes to remain nameless lest the fiery wrath of Sony descend upon them.
They claim that PSP 2 is a touchscreen affair, designed to combat the growing pressure from Apple’s rival gaming platforms, iPhone and iPod Touch. Don’t despair though, the touchscreen isn’t the only trick up its sleeve – the display is expected to slide out and reveal proper button controls, including two (woohoo!) analogue sticks.
In addition, Sony is going to amp up its downloadable games service in order to compete against the mighty iTunes App store. Previous rumours have strongly suggested that Sony will ditch the UMD drive, but backwards compatibility fans should be able to get digital versions of their favourite PSP hits from the PlayStation Store.
Pricing, specs, launch dates, official photos – all things that we’ll have to sit tight and wait for while Sony plans a grand unveil. If Christmas is indeed the launch window though, we can expect a proper announcement sometime in the next few months, probably around E3 time.

Because it's a concept, we don't know what it'll look like. The above image is actually a concept pic by a clearly talented chap called BluezPS (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/this-fan-made-psp-redesign-is-sexy/). Rumour has it though that this concept is not very far off the mark at all.
