PSP 2 rumour surfaces once again
It's high time for some new hardware
Did the PSP-3000 fail to float your boat? Are those new carnival colours not rocking your world? Don't despair, Sony may well be planning something considerably more ambitious than mere colour updates and hardware revisions: a full-blown PSP 2.
Citing “several credible sources”, IGN is reporting that a new PlayStation Portable is off the drawing board and on its way. Details are almost non-existent, but they are pointing to multi-touch touchscreen technology as the next big step for the handheld console.
Multi-touch has rapidly become the darling of portable gadget interfaces, having been so superbly implemented in devices like Apple’s iPhone. However, copying Apple’s success has already proved a major challenge for rival smartphone makers, and there’s no reason to suspect Sony would have it any easier on the PSP 2.
On the plus side though, the Xross Menu Bar used by the PSP would seem well suited to swipe commands, as it features a lot of horizontal and vertical movements.
Sony has, of course, denied everything, offering the usual refusal to comment on ‘rumour and speculation’. The only real evidence suggesting that Sony really is gearing up for a PSP 2, instead of another PSP hardware revision (the rumoured PSP-4000), is that the console maker is believed to have been sending surveys to consumers to gauge what hardware features they would want from a new console model.
