PS3 plagued by Trophy glitch

Recently discovered bug rendering some games unplayable

Sony’s tactic of frequent, minor software upgrades for the PlayStation 3 has many strengths and weaknesses. This approach has let Sony quickly introduce new features and upgrades to the platform, many of which we couldn’t now imagine being without, but with little time to extensively test these updates, it has led to a few disruptive bugs.

Players are now reporting a bug that has been messing up the Trophy system, interrupting games and even making some unplayable without undergoing a lengthy fixing process. Problems seem to appear after you make changes to your PSN ID login details – for example swapping passwords or switching your registered email address. The result is glitch in the Trophy sync data, offering up an error code (80022D11) and a message saying that the saved data has been created by another user and cannot be used.

It is so far known to have affected WipEout HD, Burnout Paradise, LittleBigPlanet, Pain, PixelJunk Eden and Soul Calibur 4.

There’s good news though. For one, you don’t need to lose your saved game files. You won’t lose your Trophies either as they are backed up on a Sony server. And Sony is already working on a patch, although there’s no firm indication of when it will be issued. CVG has also uncovered a work around if you are already suffering the problem:

  • Delete your Game Data (that's the install files for a game, NOT the Save Data).
  • Use the Backup option in the PS3's XMB to create a full backup of your hard drive.
  • Restore your PS3 from the backup.
  • Reinstall the game, install the Trophy data and the sync should work fine.

The best course of action would of course be to just not mess about with your PSN ID profile until after Sony has issued a patch to fix it. Hopefully it’ll be out shortly, but with the Xmas break just about upon us, don’t be too optimistic about it arriving this week.
