PS2 goes Hi-Def!
New gizmo will upgrade those ageing standard def games to 720p and 1080i.
Yes, you read that right - you'll soon be able to upscale regular PlayStation 2 games to 720p and 1080i Hi-Def quality, thanks to the Xploder HDTV Game Player.
Presumably using the same sort of technology as you see in upscaling DVD players, the device hooks up to your PS2 and then to an HD ready screen or projector via component video or VGA-cable. Then you get the choice between progressively scanned (but standard def) 480p or 720p/1080i Hi-Def video. The settings are then saved to your PS2 Memory Card.
Xploder claims that its proprietary upscaling technology provides "crystal clear picture quality" and allows customers to take advantage of their HDTVs now. The PS3, due for release in November, will also upscale all PS2 and PS1 games to HDTV quality. The Xploder HDTV Game Player should be out-on September 1st,-but a price has yet to be confirmed.
