Porn to be downloadable from PlayStation Network?

Ready your PS3 controller, as porn might become available on your console before you know it

Porn will soon become available on the PlayStation Network if the world's largest adult entertainment company gets approval from Sony, claims Vivid CEO Steve Hirsch.

Speaking to gaming site Kotaku, Hirsch said "Our point is pretty simple: as long as age verification is in place that (Sony) feels comfortable with, we see no reason why adults shouldn't be allowed to access adult movies on the PlayStation 3." Currently no adult entertainment is downloadable from the PS3, something Sony has felt quite strongly about in the past.

 

It's believed that the reason Sony's VHS-competitor Betamax didn't take off was due to the lack of porn available. The VHS format, backed by JVC, Matsushita (Panasonic), Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Sharp, and Akai, embraced porn from the start - and was the obvious champion of the 1980s.

 

Likewise, when the HD DVD/Blu-ray format war was still raging late 2007/early 2008, people believed HD DVD would be the successor, as backers Toshiba and Microsoft had allowed porn creators such as Digital Playground to release HD DVDs offering whatever "content" they wanted.

 

Hirsch admitted to Kotaku that Sony "had made it clear in the past they were not interested", however now that Sony is allowing Japanese gamers to download on-demand porn movies in HD from the network "we are going to move forward and make a formal request".

 

It's not just PlayStation that Hirsch has his eye on either, telling Kotaku "if we move forward here we would look at other potential gaming platforms like the Xbox 360". The Nintendo Wii is obviously not an option, due to the manufacturers' family-friendly image. If porn does become downloadable via the PlayStation Network, we see no reason why it can't be transferred to the PSP Go - just don't watch porn on the train to work, now.
