Pope’s twitter account unveiled

Pope Benedict XVI will tweet in eight languages, says Vatican

The Vatican has announced that Pope Benedict XVI has opened a twitter account and will tweet under the handle @Pontifex

His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI has become the latest famous figurehead to join the micro-blogging site Twitter. Vatican officials have revealed that the Pope has started a twitter account and will begin tweeting using the twitter handle @Pontifex from December 12th.

The Pope will not be typing in the tweets himself, but will instead approve weekly responses to followers who ask questions about faith and religion. The tweets will appear in eight different languages.

"We are going to get a spiritual message,” said Vatican Communications Adviser, Greg Burke. “The Pope is not going to be walking around with a Blackberry or an iPad and no-one is going to be putting words into the Pope's mouth."

Before the first tweet had been sent from his account, the Pope had already picked up around 150,000 followers.

The Vatican has also announced that a mobile app for smartphones and tablet and e-books are also in the pipeline.
