A Sony statement read: "PlayStation users can purchase PlayStation Plus membership through PlayStation Store on PS3 only. Users need to install PS3 system software version 3.40, which will be released on June 29, to enjoy PlayStation Plus".

It’s been suggested that the update may also introduce cross-game voice chat to the platform, as Sony makes a play to contend with the Xbox 360 Live Gold service.
