Peel app turns iPhone into universal remote control

Free app and tabletop puck

New set-up allows you to be lazier and still be tidier.

A new iPhone app, called Peel, can turn your iPhone into an electronic programme guide and double up as a universal remote for your TV, Blu-ray player and other home entertainment devices.

The Peel app, which is free to download from the App Store, produces a personalised TV guide based on inputting your favourite shows. It'll then tell you which ones are available to you.

The app also joins forces with a soon-to-be-released puck-shaped table top device that transmits the signal from your Apple handset to your TV set. Another dongle plugs into your router's Ethernet port to enable users to use their phone to control the TV via WiFi using the Zigbee protocol.

The system currently works with TVs, Blu-ray players and cable boxes, but a forthcoming update will cater for Apple TV, Roku, TiVo and home theatre receivers. The price of the Peel set-up will be determined after consulting potential users.
