Palm Pre to launch early June, will sell for $200

But when it is coming to the UK?

It's been the talk of the smartphone world since it was unveiled back at January's CES, but the Palm Pre has so far managed to avoid the retailer's shelves in either the US or the UK. Well, that wait could soon be over, in the US at least.

According to a report in the New York Times, the Palm Pre will launch with US network Sprint in the first week of June, quite possibly June 7th. Employees of Sprint stores are already rumoured to be undergoing training with the handsets, with US retailers Best Buy and Wal-Mart also said to be selling the smartphone from the June launch date, probably for around the $200 mark.

After such a long lead time, why the sudden rush to market? Simple, there's every possibility of a new iPhone announcement just days later. Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) kicks off on June 8th and the smart money is on a new Apple smartphone (which we detailed back in April). Palm, it seems, wants to get  foothold in the market before that particular bomb drops.

So where does this leave the UK? So far, absolutely nowhere. The Pre has been rumoured on just about every network so far, but no-one has confirmed anything as yet. We're hoping a UK network will be announced during the official US announcement (probably later today), but we're not convinced that's going to happen. If it doesn't appear here before the new iPhone, the Pre could be dead in the water as far as the UK is concerned.
