Ouch! Sharp TVs on the way

There's a fresh set of PAL optimised sets due for April.

Not planning on going for HDTV just yet? You're not alone - or at least that's what Sharp believes. The Japanese manufacturer has decided to launch a new range of its non-HD ready "PAL optimised" screens in April.

Coming in 26, 32 and 37-inch varieties, the P70 range has 960 x 540 resolution screens which are perfectly suited, pixel for pixel, to UK PAL telly. This means that they should make standard definition stuff from your aerial, Freeview box or Sky receiver theoretically look like, well, the dog's danglies.

Of course, this resolution means the screens aren't fully high definition compatible, although they can display downgraded 720p and 1080i pictures and come with all-digital HDMI inputs - so if standard def telly is one day turned off for good, you won't have to chuck out your Sharp LCD. But whatever you do, don't buy one if you want an HDTV!
