O2 to screen first ever interactive 3D cinema game

Wave your hands to NOT DIE

Despite UK cinemas being Orange’s chosen turf, rival network O2 is weighing in with its own treat for movie-goers. It is staging the first ever interactive 3D event on the big screen, which will invite audiences across the country to control the on-screen movements of the Starship O2 with their hands.

The game is called Asteroid Storm. Two infra-red cameras will register when different parts of the audience put their hands up; the movements are interpreted by the game server behind the scenes, so that the virtual craft can be steered safely out of an asteroid belt in real time.

Asteroid Storm will be shown in the trailer reels ahead of the 3D versions of Ice Age 3, G-Force and Toy Story. It isn’t clear whether a non-committal audience will cause the Starship O2’s hapless crew to perish in the dark void of space but to find out you’ll need to head along to a participating cinema listed below.

Vue Leicester Square
Vue Bristol Cribbs Causeway
Vue Edinburgh Waterside
Vue Finchley Road, London
Vue Kirkstall Road, Leeds
Vue West End
AMC Manchester
AMC Birmingham
Truro Plaza

Showings start on July 10th. Audience interaction could be the start of an incredible new advertising medium – we can’t wait for the day when all we have to do is wave angrily at the TV for the smug TRESemme stylist to explode in a cloud of unsightly dandruff.
