Nokia tube rumour round up: Could it actually be an iPhone killer?

Heard it on the Tubevine?

Over a year ago, we brought you news of a possible iPhone killer that would have Steve Jobs sweating in his dowdy turtleneck. A year on and we're still waiting. Today may be the day we see the Nokia 5800 aka the Tube finally unveiled.

The latest on the media monster is that it's a bit of a Nokia playsafe, not even in its N-Series, it's more of an iPhone tickler than killer. The official facts so far are these: 16MB internal memory, with an expandable 8GB micro SDHC up to 16GB, that's your lot. So, what were we expecting, and what didn't we get? Here's our round-up of news on the Tube grapevine.

- Leaked pictures and full spec in April 2008 including a 3.2 MP camera and GPS.

Quoting a full spec the phone looked to have a 3.2MP Carl Zeiss lens and weigh in at 104 grams camera, finger touch operation and built in GPS. No mention of the name "Tube" yet though and no possible release date.

- Official airing to be in 2009

Unveiling more pictures of the phone now dubbed "The Tube", speculation grew that the handset wouldn't get an official airing until 2009.

-News of a possible stylus to accompany the phone?

Leaked pictures on a Flikr site saw the 5800 with an old school stylus . Could Nokia be playing it that safe?

- The name "Tube" suggests support for mobile TV standard for Europe and mobile video.

Quotes from Tom Libertto, Vice President of Forum Nokia appear to suggest that " The handset will have Java built in as standard, and is also likely to include support for mobile TV standard for Europe and mobile video." He also confirmed that the Tube will be able to upload photos to the web, bringing HSDPA and Wi-Fi into the mix.

-The Tube is Batman's communicatory weapon of choice

Forget the posthumous Oscar for Heath, gadgeteers paused The Dark Knight to catch a glimpse of the Tube in action. Seen only for a split second, it was enough to glimpse the fact that it was smaller than first thought.

-The Tube exclusively on Vodafone?

News broke with leaked pictures that the Xpress Music handset would be available exclusively on Vodafone.

So that's what's rumoured to be on the phone, but what will we actually get? Check back here for all the news later this evening. C'mon Nokia, don't let us down, Batman wouldn't be seen dead with a rubbish phone right?
