Nokia Home Control Center unveiled

Call up your fridge for a cold drink

Nokia is planning on making your smartphone a whole lot smarter with the introduction of its Home Control Center.

Yes, not content with handling your social life, Nokia wants a piece of your home life, with new 'plug and play'  technology that promises to monitor and control your energy usage, switch devices on/off, monitor your household appliances and if you're worried about crime, watch your prized possessions via camera and motion sensors. Which could mean coming home to a nice warm house, a coffee waiting and a meal five minutes from completion. Mind you, if someone nicks your phone, who knows what hell could await?

Not much we would guess - the mention of 'high security levels' probably means Nokia has already thought about the prospect of killer vacuum cleaners and random freezer defrosting conducted by aggrieved colleagues. But we'll find out for sure when the technology is demonstrated at the Nokia World event in Barcelona in December. Expect to see it in your home by the end of 2009.
