Nokia will however be wary of the competition after it was revealed that Samsung have seen impressive growth coming second with 22 per cent while Apple is now third in the world with its iPhone 4S at 8.7 per cent.
The results have proven that despite the colossal switchover to Windows Phone Nokia has still managed to pull through what was essentially a year with very few phones being released.
Of course it is easy to forget that Nokia in fact relies heavily on its trade in Asia and South America with their range of affordable Symbian phones such as the new Nokia Asha being key to keeping their global hold.
IDC's figures did however reveal that the company has a lot of work to do if it is to maintain its current position, Samsung's growth from 20 to 22 per cent of the market will no doubt only be increased with the upcoming release of handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S3.
