Nintendo to trademark phrase "It's on like Donkey Kong"

Just a publicity stunt for New DK game? It's worked

Donkey Kong Country Returns landing on Wii on 3rd December

Following on from Apple’s trademarking of the phrase “There’s an App for that” and Nintendo’s previous patent of “It’s-a-me, Mario,” the latter has just filed another trademark application for “It’s on like Donkey Kong.”

You might think that it’s a bit of a random decision, but all becomes clear when you remember that Donkey Kong Country Returns – a sequel to the 1981 SNES original – is landing on the Wii imminently. The phrase is regarded to have been coined by Ice Cube on Now I Gotta Wet’cha, but has appeared multiple times in TV and film since. If Ninty is successful in its bid, future use will have to come at a cost.
