News@8: HTC Desire Android 'FroYo' update and N8 delays

Welcome to your nightly roundup of the days news, reviews and goings on courtesy of T3.com

FroYo arrives to the networks: Two of the leading networks have announced that Android 2.2 ‘FroYo’ will be available for the HTC Desire in a matter of days. Both Virgin and Vodafone have made the step forward by allowing customers to download the superhuman update onto their handsets. Word has also reached us that the latest incarnation of Android 3.1 or 3.2 will be called 'Honeycomb'. Android 3.0 'Gingerbread' has already been confirmed however will likely only be used for Tablets.

Let Facebook know where you are: Facebook has launched a ‘Places’ feature for iPhone which will allow users to ‘tag’ themselves and their friends at their current location. Integrated into the app, Facebook is hoping it will allow more people to meet up. However, concerns have been raised as to the privacy risks involved which no doubt will result in weeks of banter between Facebook and its critics.

In Nokia news, Play.com has revealed that the launch of the N8 is delayed until October. Originally it was shown as being available on 26 August, however its now been pushed back to 8 Oct.

HTC to make iPad rival: Despite the strong and unequivocal statements that they would NOT be making a tablet, it appears as though Desire makers might have changed their minds. Insider sources have announced a Chrome OS HTC Tablet could be landing before Christmas. This rather surprising news should of course be taken with a pinch of salt until official sources confirm, but for the moment, lets just savour the thought of it. Also in the world of Chinese whispers is the rumour that there will be a Toshiba Android Tablet coming soon. The source claiming to be the manufacturers say the device will be arriving within a month. It’s reported to have a 10-inch screen and contain the speedy Nvidia Tegra 2 chip.

Touchscreen PSP2? Yes please: Developers have announced that Sony has in fact been doing the rounds with a PSP2 with touch sensitive controls. The device although not confirmed by Sony will be hoping to cash in on the glory of the Nintendo DS, whilst offering vastly improved graphics. Onto sports gaming now and the rivalry is clearly on after the popular football game PES 11 is to be released just one day before FIFA 11 its main rival.

Canon wows with new compacts: Canon has unveiled 2 new compact cameras, one of which the IXUS HS1000 is in honour of the IXUS series being around for 10-years. The IXUS HS1000 boasts some truly impressive specs such as full 1080p recording and a 10x optical zoom. Alongside the HS1000 is the Canon S95, the new update to the hugely popular S90 camera, whilst offering only 720p recording it has a much larger sensor and a unique lens control ring.
