New PSP confirmed

Sony has finally admitted there's a new PSP in the works, and that it's slimmer and lighter than previously expected.

We've suspected Sony's got a new PSP up its sleeve for months, although all the rumours to cross our path pointed towards a pimped-out, spec-heavy games monster, rather than a slimmed down micro-gamer that now looks on the cards.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment UK's managing director Ray Maguire, the new machine is smaller and lighter, but not ready to be introduced just yet.

Speaking at the launch of Sony's PSP in Education drive, Maguire was heard by the guys at GamesIndustry.biz, saying that redesigns would bring a more pocket-friendly PSP, although screen size would remain "fixed" at the current size.

It's a curious move from Sony, who now seem to be aping Nintendo in the quest for a DS Lite-style diet plan for PSP.

We had heard that a new version of Sony's handheld would cram in a video camera, gigabytes of flash memory and lots more features to keep spec-obsessed gamers happy.

As it stands, it seems Sony's content to keep the PSP's existing clutch of goodies, but on a smaller scale. Will it work? Stay tuned.
