New MacBook Pros are go!

LED backlighting, faster processors, a lighter frame and, crucially, one less thing to announce at WWDC. Whatever will Stevie J fill his time with?

Apple's whipped the dustsheets of its latest MacBook Pros, showing off the same svelte aluminium frame we're used to, but packing less weight inside and with a swanky new LED backlit screen.

The last addition is perhaps the most important, and promises longer battery life and richer colours. The screens can be thinner too, which has almost certainly contributed to the MBP's weight loss.

As well as slipping in LED screens, the 17-inch MacBook Pro now comes with an optional high-resolution display. Pumping out pixels at 1920x1200 - big enough to edit HD films at their native resolution.

The new MacBooks come in 2.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz flavours for 15-inch models and 2.4 GHz- in 17-inch format.

As ever, these slick new laptops come with Apple's backlit keyboard, and N-standard Wi-Fi, iSight video camera. There's also a new video card in the shape of NVIDIA's GeForce 8600M GT.

What's left on our minds is what Apple has in store for WWDC next week. Steve Jobs will take to the stage to show off the next version of OS X, but does the recent flurry of hardware updates mean it'll be a software-only show?
